Standing - Grip Fighting Flashcards

Q

Grip in the collar

A
  1. Make a V with your same side hand and come up under the grip to push it up and off. It helps to shrug the grip off as well.
  2. Two on one grip the hand in your collar. Lock your hands in place and move your body backwards to break the grip (instead of pulling it with your hands only). Push down on the grip as you move back.
  3. Grab under their sleeve with your hand on the same side and then over the meat of the thumb with the other hand. Pull down to break.

Q

Pressure from the bottom

A

The bottom player has pressure too.

The top player uses their body weight and gravity to put pressure on and close the distance.

The bottom player exerts pressure by pushing the top player away and making it hard for them to settle.

The bottom player should maintain pressure when defending just as the top player does when attacking.

Q

Hanging on to grips

A

Don’t hang on your grips as much, if you get swept thats fine. Just shrimp, elevate a leg etc and come back up.

Don’t hang on to a grip indefinitely. Instead, get a grip, push and pull and see what they do.
If you get an opportunity you go for it or you make them move.

A grip is not a commitment, its just a tool. Its a piece of a flow, not an end goal in itself.

Q

Grips and tension

A

If the opponent pushes and you push back you create a neutral position. You effectively neutralize his grip. For example, if the opponent is grabbing your pants at the knee in open guard and you grab his sleeve. As he pushes your knee down you push his arm up. The equal and opposite forces create an opportunity for you to move your leg.

You can always change direction and move with the opponent (Ie. push and they pull) should the situation call for it.

Q

Top Game Strategy from Pete Kang

A

They Key to the top game is to settle.

Once you settle you have to have a plan and you move forward methodically.

The opponent should feel like your top game is one long wrestling pin. You have to maintain the position before anything else. You worked hard to get there.

Position before submission and keep the pressure on.
