Q

Tripod/ Sickle Sweep

A

Tripod sweep
From open guard..
You have a sleeve and the heel on the opposite side. Your feet are on their hips…
The foot opposite your heel grip hooks behind the leg at the knee or ankle…
Push with the foot the hip to bring them down…
As they go back, keep your wrist and ankle grip and pull your pushing foot back in to avoid getting tangled up…
Come to the top of open guard…

Sickle sweep
As above but they step around your hook behind the knee…
Come to your side and put your former hooking foot next to the other foot on the hips…
Bring the foot that was on their hip down behind their far ankle…shrimp forward if you have to… and sweep with the same pushing motion, pulling the foot back etc

Tripodfrom de la riva…
Same as above but the de la riva hook goes on the hip and the other foot hooks. From the de la riva you should already have the grip on the same side heel as the hook.

Q

Butterfly sweep

A

Start from the basic butterfly guard. You are on your back. They’ve got their elbows in your hips and they’re holding you down, preventing movement.

Pop your hips up just a little bit to make their head bounce up and off your chest. Get your forearm between your chest or stomach and their chin. Use your forearm to make them look away from you.

Put your other arm on top of your wrist to make a frame and bounce your hips again. Push with your arms and extend your legs. Use the butterfly hooks to sit up into a seated butterfly guard.

Swim one arm into an under hook.Grab the belt and use your other hand to control their arm on the other side. Control the arm at the elbow. You can use the sleeve but the elbow is better.

Scoot your hips under them and roll back and elevate them. Roll to the side and elevate with the same leg as the under hook. As you elevate them push their elbow to their chest to prevent them from posting. Roll over into mount.

If you end up with an over hook instead of an under hook. Use the same movement but start from a little farther back and really scoot your butt under them. As you elevate them you turn with your over hook and shove their other hand under them in and turning motion.

Q

Caio Terra De la riva sweep

A

From De lA Rive bottom…

Pass your arm on your hooking leg side between your leg and their ankle. Hook their ankle elbow deep…

Butterfly hook their far leg behind their knee and pull your self under them. Deepen your underhook on their neat leg and get perpendicular to them. It’s fine if your DeLaRiva hook pops off at this point.

Straighten the leg that’s hooking their far knee to push that leg forward and away from you. Use the pushing motion to square up to their near leg…

Keep your far hook and use your near leg to put pressure into their near leg. Internally rotate your knee to do this. This will extend their knee and force them to fall back…

As they hit the mat grab their far ankle and swing your leg off of their leg. Elevate their legs and come on top…

Q

De la riva sit up

A

You have the de la riva guard. Gripping the ankle on the same side as your hook and reaching up to grab a sleeve or lapel with the other hand. Non-hooking leg on theirfar hip

Move back and forth and pull on the sleeve or lapel to keep them off balance…

They step back out of the del la riva guard. Trying to make space and get away…

Keep your grips and use their momentum to pull yourself up to a sitting position…

Once you’ve pulled yourself up you have 3 options:

  1. Take the hand that was on their lapel/ sleeve and pick their ankle as you push on their hip with your other hand. Continue sitting up and pass the leg to get to side control
  2. As you come up, take the foot that was on their hip, drop it down and S-sit around their ankle. Hug their leg (opposite hand from the S-sit). Put your head on their hip and drive forward. The movement is like a tactical get up but you have the leg trapped. If you go for option #2 and they step out of it… switch the S-sit and bring your arm forcefully inside their leg in a hooking motion. Their heel will be trapped by your leg and force on their hip will cause them to fall back.
  3. If they put pressure into you as you’re going for the single leg. They are grabbing the collar, leaning into you etc.
Switch your S-sit so that your front leg is your outside leg…
Duck behind them and between their legs so that you’re looking up at them. Get as far under them as you can…
Once you’re under them, grab their belt and pull them down so that they fall over you (not onto you). Scramble up and pressure pass

Q

Basic game plan

A

From the bottom of open guard.

Make and control the space. If they start to crush you and take away space, you need to get up or sweep them. You can let them immobilize you and work their game. If they are working their game they will eventually win.

You want to get sticky right away, dont wait for them to set up a pass. Close the distance, get the inside angle and start off balancing.

If you extend a leg you need to pull them into you. There always has to be tension…

Q

Entry to x guard

A

They are standing in your open guard…

Scoot in and wrap one of their legs with your arm…

Make sure that the top of your opposite foot is in front of the ankle on the leg you’re attacking…

Attach yourself to the leg and fall to the opposite side. Hook their far leg and bring your free foot in under your hooking foot. Use the x to push up and away to stretch them out…

Turn into them and push them backwards or, if they lean forwards, do a tactical stand up while elevating their foot

Tonys Simple x guard entry

A

From open guard…

You have a foot on the hip and a grip on the arm and leg on that side…

Straighten the leg and then drop the knee and slide it behind their knee. Get perpendicular and pull yourself into x guard. Raise your bottom foot into position below the top one to complete the position…

Q

De lar riva + open guard movement

A

Your grips on the feet and hands in open guard are there mostly to keep a grip on the person and not let them run away and around your guard…

From de la riva…they stuff your far leg…

Switch to reverse de la riva and hook their other leg…

Move into x guard…

Move into single leg x…

Keep moving and keep them off balance at all times…
