Half Guard to back take #1

Underhook

A

From bottom of half guard with your arm under hooking their arm and your hand on their knee. Move deeper towards their hips so that their arm is resting above your shoulder…

Pinch the arm between your shoulder and neck. Think of this position as “half back”…

Bridge into them and push your top arm forward to shrug off the arm resting above your shoulder. As soon as your head is free get up on your elbow and swing your leg around their back to sink your second hook…

Once the hook is in use your inside arm to grab a harness grip and roll to back mount…

If you get their arm off via the shrug but you can’t get your leg over their back to sink your second hook for some reason…

Hip escape away from them and use your top arm to grab their far hip. Pull them towards you and sink your inside arm into a harness grip as you come to back mount…

Knee Shield to back take

A

From half guard bottom…

Knee shield is up and you’re defending the cross face…

They start to push your leg down…

Grab their wrist and shoot your leg through the gap under their arm. Push the wrist to their chest and arm drag…

Pull yourself into them and sit up, keeping their arm close to your chest. Take the hand that was controlling their wrist and throw it around to their far hip…

Scoot your hips back and keep control of their arm as you pull them into the space where you just were and take back control…

Escape to closed guard

A

From half guard bottom, on your side and grip fighting…

Use your top arm to from their neck by placing it across them below the chin and cupping their shoulder. Use your other arm to check their hip and prevent them from driving into you…

Once you have established control and blocked their forward progress, post off yournon-draping leg and shrimp to pull your draping leg out of half guard and into a butterfly hook. Keep the non-posting leg relaxed as you do this…

As you get the butterfly hook swing your outside leg up and hook over their back, use the knee on the butterfly hooking side to block their other hip…

From here get to open guard or switch hips and clear the butterfly hook to regain closed guard…

Q

Giggler sweep progression

A

Basic Giggler
From half guard bottom…

They have the under hook but you are defending the cross face with yourhand on their bicep…

Put the foot of your free leg on the ankle of your trapping leg. This will help your legs act as a unit…

Switch your hips and use your knees to pinch their hip. Push up on their bicep pull in on their under hook using their arms as a wheel to turn them over…

Roll over to half guard or mount top…

Modified giggler from tight half guard
Same situation as above but they have you flattened the giggler sweep will not work because you are on your back and have no leverage or momentum…

Take your trapping leg off their leg as you bring your other leg the free leg over their ankle pulling it outwards and twisting their knee…

Use your now free wrapping leg to post and get your hips under them…

Continue hipping under them and sweep in a similar motion as the giggler sweep…

Giggler to under hook to modified harness grip
Tight half guard same as above you go for the giggler sweep and they post out with their under hooking arm to avoid being taken over. When they do this they make space…

Quickly swim under their arm with your own under hook…

Reach your under hooking hand across their shoulders and put the back of your hand against their shoulder. Take your other hand off their bicep and grab in a gable grip by their neck. Their arm should be by your ear and you’re ready to shrug the arm and take the back…

If they stay above you just go for the modified giggler as above…

If they flatten and move away from you
shrimp out…

Get a 718 hook and then square up to full butterfly hooks with your hips under them, keeping your grips…

Push them away with your butterfly hooks and then roll to your side to sweep to half guard or mount top…

Q

Lachlan Giles Sweep

A

From half guard bottom with the knee shield…

Stay on your side and control the distance with your knee shield. You want your hips away from them. You also don’t want your draping leg too deep. If they pinch their knees they should not trap your knee.
Block the cross face and stay mobile and don’t get locked into the position…

Reach your same side arm into the space between your knee shield and their body. Lift your knee shield up and kick with through as you get the underhook.

As soon as you have the underhook, use your other elbow as a post to scoot your hips around the corner so that your parallel to them. You should be on your elbow with your chest facing the ground and a deep underhook across to their far hip…

If they try to pummel back in for their own underhook, defend by pulling with your underhook and pushing that shoulder forward at the same time to remove space.

Switch your draping legs and pull their leg outwards to make their hips face away from you. Firmly post your pulling foot on the mat to trap their leg. Post off this leg to bridge into them with your hips. This will make their leg light enough for you to get your trapped leg out. Use a tactical standup motion and pull the leg out to post behind you…

Keep your head under them or in their rips, drive off your posted rear leg and grab their far leg to come on top…

If you try for the bridge and they are really driving into you, underhook their far leg and pull it to you. Switch directions and use your post to bridge into their knee and under their hips. Roll them over and get on top…
