Open Guard Top Flashcards
Open Guard Pass #1- X pass
From open guard top with grips on both ankles…
Push one ankle outwards and insert your knee behind theirs, pushing in to block the knee.
Switch the hand on that side to their hip…
Swing your leg out to clear their other foot so that their foot is between your legs, squat down and put weight on that foot with your butt, keep your hand on the hip and put your other hand on their knee…
Push up out of the squat and push their knee backwards forcefully as you raise your inside leg straight back and around the leg you’re pushing…
Come to knee on belly…
Open Guard Pass #2 - Inversion Pass
Open guard top with their feet on your hips
Get grips on both their ankles and push the ankles up and forward. The goal is to stack them and put them in basically in the bottom of a full inversion
Get your chest on their tail bone so that they can’t sit back into you…
Get a hold of one of their arms and trap it under under your knee on that same side…
From this position you can either push them away from that arm and take a top side control or you can push them towards their arm and take the back…
Put both your hands on their hip and pull in the direction you choose…
Open Guard Pass #3- Torreando Pass

They are sitting in open guard…
Bend down and grab both ankles and elevate them…
Push both ankles back into their chest. Run your hands along their legs and grab the fabric at the knees…
Pull the knees forward and straighten them out as much as possible. Pin the legs to the mat by putting all your weight on them (you should be able to do a push up)…
Keep your legs away from their feet and run your legs around their pinned feet…
Put your shoulder in their belly button and drive into them, putting them on their back. Make sure you elevate their legs as you drive. You might have to back step to keep your balance…
Take your near hand and pitit by their near hip. This keeps them from getting their leg in.
Pass your other hand under your body and around towards their head. Get a cross face or cross collar and drive into them to put them on their side…]
Flow into a back take or arm bar…
Jeff Glover Simple standing passes
Step through and Reverse Step through
Standing in open guard, you have your knee between their legs and have a hand on the hip and a hand on their leg.. From here you can walk forwards towards your leg grip or backwards away from it
- Walk Backwards
Move in a circular motion away from your grip on their knee. Once momentum is established, lift your leg out of their guard and push their leg by to land in knee on belly… - Walk forwards…
Move towards the grip on their leg.
Pull your leg out and move if past their guard to a reverse knee on belly…
Back step and move to a regular knee on belly…

Knee Shield Counters
You can preempt the knee shield altogether by making sure you set up the pass correctly. When you put your hand on their hip to control them for an x pass or a knee cut or similar, you need to close the gap between the arm controling yheir hip and your rips. That gap is where the knee sheild sneaks in…
You can do this by dropping your forearm along the inner thigh while controling the hip. Keep your elbow tight to your rips and use your hand, forearm and upper arm to create a barrier to their knee. If they try to bring thier leg up and around your head, just flare your elbow to maintain position…keep your head low.
Do all of the above before entering into your pass.
You are trying to pass but they have a knee shield…
- Hook under their bottom leg to keep them from extending it and getting their guard back…
Put your other hand on their hip and walk slightly back and sideways to flatten then…
Bring your elbow inside their knee and get a better position to block the knee sheild on your next pass attempt… - Assuming you’re in a knee cut position…
Grab the ankle on the knee shield leg…
Step your posting leg forward and bring your hips forward just enough to clear their knee shield…
As soon as your clear, switch your hips and come to a reverse half guardtype position. This hip switch should be done very quickly so that they dont have time to get their leg back in as you turn away. That will get your back taken… - You are on your knees…
Get a leg weave with your inside arm and pin their bottom wrist with your other arm. Put your head in their belly…
Maintain position as you straighten both legs…
Cut your draped knee to the side and baseball slide over their shin to get your knee free…
Once the knee is free, windsheild wiper your leg the rest of the way out. Turn your body as you do this so that your more perpendicular to them… Push forward for side control top… - They have a low knee sheild. Like a z guard. They are on their side…
Reach your inside arm around their hips while using the other hand to grab the top of their bottom knee to prevent guard recovery…
Squeeze and put pressure down with your chest on their top leg to pin it. Straighten the legs and bring your head to the mat…
Move the foot on your trapped leg toward their butt ( you may have to adjust your feet and hips slightly) and then flick over the top of their hooking leg. Pin their shin with your shin.
Use your head as a post to hop over their legs to the other side…
If they catch you as your jumping over, try to land in a knee cut and continue passing… - From a low knee sheild/ z guard situation…
Get perpendicular to them and pinch their draping leg between your knees…
Keepnyour chest up and hips low. You want to feel that your chest is behind their knee sheild ready to push…
Step your draped leg towards their butt and move your hips towards that foot while pushing their knee with your chest…
Walk your other leg in a circle away from them to prevent them grabbing it…
This motion will flatten then and square you up to them. You’ll still be in half guard but it will be easier…

Ankle Stuff Pass
From standing in someones open guard…
Gain control of both ankles and push one in towards their butt…
Step in with your opposite side leg so that your foot is by their butt, replace your hand on their ankle with your shin and push in to pin their ankle to their butt…
Bring your other hand to their outside hip and put the hand that was on Their ankle on the knee of the pinned leg…
Keep the pressure on their leg and use your hand on their knee to push the knee inwards and down, straightening their leg…
Drop your knee and come to knee on belly…
Knee Shield Drive and kick pass
From half guard / open guard top…
They have a knee shield and are stopping you from passing…
Leg lace under their knee shield and over their bottom leg, cupping their thigh. Put pressure forward with your trapped leg and make your shoulder heavy on their top leg…
Use all the pressure forward as a post to hold them in place and support your weight. Post our with your other hand and bring your free foot towards your hips for leverage…
Kick your trapped leg straight back to free it and then bring it around and behind their knees… Maintain forward pressure and place your knee between their knees as you continue to drive. Hide your foot behind their leg. Stay low to prevent being swept. Drop your head towards your shoulders…
Remove your leg lace and get an underhook on their far side arm…
Advance to the mount or back step around to the back. Keep the underhook and use it for control

Leg lace pressure pass
From open guard top. Thier top knee isndown and you have an opportunity to leg lace…
throw the leg lace on and push the top knee down with your shoulder using all your weight…
Grab their collar with your other hand and put your head in their chest. This will prevent them from sitting up and grabbing the kimura…
Walk your legs around towards their head and push into them to flatten them and get side control…
Dont release the leg lace until you have settles and have head control…
