Mount Bottom Flashcards
Escape #1-Trap and Roll
Classic Upa Escape and Variations
From bottom of mount with their hands on your chest…
Trap their wrist and forearm with your same side hand behind their tricep…
Trap the foot on that same side and bridge up to make them post with their free hand…
Switch your hips and roll over into the top of guard, controlling the biceps to prevent punches…
If they post their leg…
Same as above but they post with the leg on the trapped side to prevent the roll over…
Take your forearm that was behind their tricep and put it under their posted knee, bring your knee to your elbow, hip switch to get your leg out and drape their leg with your now free leg…
post off the draping leg and get your other elbow inside their other knee to escape the other leg, switch your hips again to release your foot and come to guard…
Upa tobackdoor escape from modified mount…
If you try the Upa as above and they move to modified mount…
Slide both hands under their thigh, bridge up and push them off by moving your hands towards your head and scooting under them and out behind their leg. Turn away form them as you do this…
Once you are out, grab their hips and take the back by sliding in the far hook…
Escape #2-Elbow Escape
From mount bottom survival position…
The opponent is able to move high up on your chest, making the bump escape ineffective…
Post one leg on the mat and get to your hip. Bring your elbow to the mat and insert it between their knee and your body. Use the other arm as a tight frame to block their hips…
Use your elbow to push the knee up and away from you while shrimping off your posted leg. Use the space created by the shrimp to bring your knee to your elbow…
Once your knee has cleared their knee, place your foot on that leg flat on the floor. This will bring your shin to a vertical position, creating a block, and will give you a hook on their leg if needed…
Once the foot is flat and their knee is cleared, switch your hips again and bring both arms over to the other side. Use both hands to control the knee. This prevents them from crushing down with their hips or moving to close distance…
While controlling their knee with both hands, shrimp off your posted foot (the one past their knee). This will allow you to create enough space to recover guard. As long as you can keep their knee away with your hands you can shrimp multiple times to create the space you need…
Tips
If they move far enough up on your chest your arms will begin to separate and your elbow will be outside their knee as you start your escape. From this position move your elbow in an inverted U up and over their thigh to the inside of the knee, between you and their knee. You can now start the escape.
When framing the hips for a mount escape, face your hand on their hips palm towards you to prevent the wrist lock. Tuck the elbow on that side into their inner thigh…
Tunnel Escape
From mount bottom. They have grapevines and are heavy…
First step is to organize your legs. Strip the grape vines by kicking towards the ceiling and then bringing your leg across your midline. Plant your foot near your butt to prevent them from getting the grapevine back…
If they cross the legs in a grapevine, use your foot to strip off the top leg and return them to normal grapevines…
If the opponent is in high mount, shrimp back with your shoulders until you can get your elbows in…
Control their hips by making a frame on their hips. your elbow should be on the floor and your other hand should frame their hip on the same side. Make sure the hand with the elbow on the floor is supporting the other hand. You should be able to take their full body weight on this frame and use it to keep them from away from you…
First bridge to bring them forward and make their legs light. Do a normal shrimp away. Push on their knee with your elbow and try to scoop it back into your guard…
Connect your knee and elbow.
If the above doesn’t work and you can’t get your knee through. Bridge and power shrimp, inverting your knees (the top of your ankle should be facing the mat). You should be well on your side so that your hips are sideways and are lifting them off the ground. This will create a space to being your bottom knee through the space between their leg and your body…
Once your knee is through, move to the side and straight to single leg x and a leg lock.

Quick and dirty escape
From mount bottom…
Quickly reach across their body with your cross side hand and straight arm into their hip. The goal is to make them load up that leg. You need some force to make this happen…
Use the straight arm asa post to keep them loaded on that side as you shrimp to the other side…

Escape to singe leg-X
Keep your elbows in and get your palms under their hips…
Bridge straight up and press them up as you bring in a knee to the space between your hands…
Turn off to the side for single leg x and the heel hook…
Foot Scoop and elbow escape combo
Pay attention to where their weight is placed. Their reaction dictates your escape.
Keep their hips as low as possible.
Don’t expose your tricep to the opponent.
Get inside leg positioning, your knee should be past the line of their ankle.
Block the hip by reaching across their whole waist. Your hand blocks one hip and you elbow wraps around to block the other.
Get your other elbow inside their knee and push the knee out. If you’re having trouble getting the elbow in, glue the elbow to your ribs, lean away and then lean back (2:22 in video) to make space. Get to your side and push the knee away…
Push the knee and hip escape away to get your knee past the line of their ankle.
Scoop the their foot up by reaching across with your opposite leg. Once you have their foot trapped, reverse shrimp/ hip switch to half guard with good frames…
You do the above but can’t get the scoop because they are heavy on that leg. Their other leg will be light…
Use both feet to push your lower back into their light leg (it will be the one behind you). Don’t hip escape, just push back, your hips should not pass the line of their legs…
Your push back will create a gap for you to bring your knee through to single leg x. The
If they cross their legs behind your butt. Use your foot to find their top heel and kick it away. Pommel your other leg in and flatten it to regain inside leg position…
