Spinal Cord and Meninges Flashcards
Two Enlargements of the spinal cord
cervical (c4-t1)-brachial plaxus
lumbar (region of vertebrae T11-L1) lumbar and sacral plexus
Conus Medullaris
termination of the spinal cord
Cauda Equina
“horse tail” formed by spinal nerve roots of the lumbar and sacral plexus
located in the lumbar cistern (subarachnoid space)
Structure of Spinal Nerves
31 pairs of spinal nerves
dorsal (afferent) and ventral (efferent) nerve roots from spinal nerves
dorsal nerve roots travel through or terminate in grey matter of dorsal horn
ventral nerve roots originate in gray matter of the ventral horn
Dura Matter
dural sac extends from foramen magnum
distal end of dural sac is FILUM TERMINALE (attaches to coccyx)
spinal nerve roots pierce dura and form dural sleeves
Epidural Space
space between vertebral bone and dura, contains adipose tissue, venous plexus
Arachnoid
middle layer between dura and pie
Space between Pia and Arachnoid space
subarachnoid space
filled with CSF
cisterns-large areas of subarachnoid space
Pia Matter
inner most layer
in spinal cord-small extension from dentate ligaments
dentate ligaments ancho the spinal cord to the dura
distal end-pia fillament extends from conus medullaris to end of dural sac
