Muscles of Neck Flashcards
Sternocleidomastoid
Inf) sternal head-anterior manubrium
Clavicular head– medial 1/3 of clavicle
Sup) Mastoid process of temporal bone (lateral surface)
laterial 1/2 superior nuchal line of occipital bone
N) CN 11
A) unilaterally-ipsilateral flexion and rotation to opposite side
bilaterally-flexes neck
Platysma
Superficial Muscle:
Inf) fascia & skin over pectoralis major & deltoid muscle
Sup) Inferior border of mandible & skin of lower face
N) CN 7- cervical branch (facial n)
A) tense skin of neck, depresses angles of mouth, weak mandible depressor
Sternohyoid
Inf) posterior surface of manubrium and medial clavicle
Sup) body of hyoid
N) ansa cervicalis
A) depresses hyoid
Thyrohyoid
Inf) oblique line of thyroid cartilage
Sup) Body of greater horn of hyoid
N) C1 (VPR) via CN XII (hypoglossal)
A) depresses hyoid and elevated thyroid
Omohyoid
O: Inferior Belly–superior border scapula (near suprascapular notch)
Superior Belly– intermediate tendon
I: Inferior belly–intermediate tendon (inferior border hyoid)
Superior belly– body of hyoid
N: ansa cervicalis
A: depresses, retracts and stabilizes hyoid
Sternothyroid
Inf: Posterior manubrium of sternum
Sup: oblique line of thyroid cartilage
N: ansa cervicalis
A: depresses the thyroid cartilage
Mylohyoid
Sup: mylohyoid line of mandible
Inf: raphe and body of hyoid
N: mylohyoid n (branch of V3, CN5)
A: elevates hyoid and tongue during speech and swallowing
Geniohyoid
Sup: inferior mental spine of manible
Inf: body of hyoid
N: branch od C1 via CN 12 (hypoglossal)
A: pulls hyoid anterosuperiorly (widens pharynx)
Diagastric
O: Anterior belly–diagastric fossa of mandible
Posterior belly–mastoid notch of tempooral bone
I: Intermediate tendon to hyoid (body&greater horn)
N: Anterior belly–mylohyoid nerve (branch of v3…CN5)
Posterior belly– CN7
A: depresses mandible, elevates hyoid
Stylohyoid
Sup: styloid process of temporal bone
Inf: body of hypoid
N: CN7 (facial nerve, cervicle branch)
A: elevates and retracts hyoid (elongates floor of mouth)
Scalene anterior
Sup: transverse process C3-C6
Inf: 1st rib (scalene tubercle)
A: lateral flexion of cervicle spine, assists in rotating neck to opposite side
Scalenus medius
Sup: transverse process of C2-C7
Inf: superior surface of 1st rib (posterior to subclavian groove)
A: elevates 1st rib (accessory muscle of inspiration) lateral flexion of the cervical spine
Scalenus Posterior
Sup: transverse process C4-C6
Inf: outer surface 2nd rib
A: lateral flexion of cervical spine elevates 2nd rib (acessory muscle of inspiration)
Longus Coli (cervicus)
Inf: vertebral bodies C5-T3 and transverse processes C3-C5
Sup: body C2-C4, transverse processes C5-C6, anterior tubercle of atlas
A: flexes head and neck
Longus Capitis
Inf: anterior tubercles transverse processes C3-C6
Sup: base of skull
A: flexes head and neck
