She is entering highschool and is an outcast because of what happened at the party. This makes her uninterested in school work and lonely + she gets made fun of.

22
Q

who is “IT”? Why does IT make Melinda so upset?

A

IT is Andy Evans, which is the person who SA’d Melinda and who she called the cops on at the party. Andy appears to be attractive and athletic. He continues to torment Melinda at school with small gestures such as leaning over her and calling her “fresh meat.

23
Q

Why is David Melinda’s hero?

A

David bravely called out mr. neck for his lesson being “racist, intolerant, and xenophobic.” He also threatened to sue the school district and mr. neck for incompetence and civil rights violations. He uses a tape and video recorder to document “potential future violations”.

24
Q

What is melinda’s family life like?

A

Melinda and her parents communicate through written notes. For example, she writes when she needs school supplies or a ride to a mall. She thinks they have a good system. She thinks her parents are too busy to be interested in her feelings; they only care about how she’s doing in school.

25
Q

What is melinda’s sanctuary? Describe it in detail. What is melinda’s purpose of having a sanctuary?

A

Melinda’s sanctuary is the long-abandoned janitors closet. The janitors closet is where she feels safe (safe-haven) and where she is alone with her thoughts. She decorates the closet a bit to make it more comfortable, filling it with books and covering up a mirror on the wall with an inspiring poster of Maya Angelou.

26
Q

Why does Maya Angelou inspire Melinda?

A

Maya is one of the greatest American writers. She is known for speaking our about her personal sexual assault, which Melinda can relate to. One of her books got banned by the school board which Melinda thought was cool because even the school board is afraid of her. She sees this poster as empowering and it inspires her to speak up about her trauma.

27
Q

What does Melinda mean when she says her room belongs to an alien?

A

She has changed and outgrown her room. It feels like it is someone else’s room because it was heavily influenced by her friends and it does not represent her at all. It is pink, has a canopee bed and a stuffed bunny collection.

28
Q

What happened to the turkey at thanksgiving?

A

On thanksgiving Melinda’s dad created a disgusting turkey soup, so they ordered pizza instead. Melinda thinks the turkey was a waste for a lousy dinner, and she wanted to commemorate it by creating art with the bones. She glues the bones together, used knifes as legs, and a barbie-doll head in the center. The artwork she creates becomes a representation of her emotional state from her trauma. She compares the bare bones to herself; striped away of her innocence and dignity. Ivy thinks its scary in a weird way, and that Melinda did a good job. Mr. Freeman things its excellent and represents pain.

29
Q

What is dramatic irony? give an example

A

when the audience knows something the character doesn’t.

A

saying the opposite of what you mean.
ex. on the first day of school, teachers say “we are here for you”, but they aren’t.

31
Q

What is structural irony? give an example

A

When characters are completely unaware of the situation they are in. This is often due to lack of intelligent or ignorance.
ex. Melinda’s lack of understanding on why she can’t speak up or on how to cope with her trauma

32
Q

What is situational irony?

A

When something happens opposite to the way you expect.
ex. Melinda getting smashed with potatoes in the cafeteria

33
Q

What art assignment does mr. freeman give to Melinda.

A

Melinda has to make a tree say something, express an emotion, and speak to every person who looks at it. She thinks this is easy because she learned how to draw a tree in 2nd grade. However, she has trouble drawing a tree the portrays a message and emotion.

34
Q

Identify one theme or symbol used in the first marking period.

A

loneliness and isolation can be painful.

35
Q

What happens in biology class while dissecting frogs? What does it remind her of?

A

Melinda passes out while dissecting frogs and hits her head on the table. It reminds her of her trauma because the frog is so vulnerable as she’s about to cut it, and it is not saying a word.
