Q

What is Cancer?

A

-is a disease characterized by cells that grow and divide without respect to normal limits
-Invade and destroy adjacent tissues
-May spread to distant site by metastasis
-Aggressive growth of cells that doesn’t stop

A

can kill the host

17
Q

the extent or severity of a person’s cancer is known as

18
Q

prognosis

A

-whether the cancer has spread
If caught early, some can be cured
-the predicted outcome is based on pathological staging

19
Q

most common type of skin cancer

A

basal cell carcinoma

20
Q

most severe form of skin cancer

21
Q

what does the ABCDE method of mole assessments mean

A

it assesses moles that could be cancerous using these prompts. A stands for asymmetry. Symmetrical is healthy and asymmetrical is unhealthy. B stands for border. even edges is healthy and rough edges is unhealthy. C stands for color, 1 color means healthy, uneven colors mean unhealthy. D stands for diameter, 6mm or less is healthy and more is unhealthy. E stands for evolving. It is unhealthy if it is growing, changing color, becoming uneven, etc.

22
Q

where was HeLa Cells harvested and what is so special about HeLa cells

A

HeLa cells have been harvested when a doctor at John Hopkins hospital preformed a biopsy and took pieces of her tumor. What’s so special about her cells is that they are immortal, so they never die off and they always continue dividing

23
Q

list 6 contributions to healthcare that HeLa cells helped with

A

-polio vaccine
-human papilloma vaccine
-IVF vaccine
-covid 19 vaccine
-genetics and gene mapping
-cervical cancer research

24
Q

false positive and false negative

A

during his cancer screening there might be a false negative result, resulting in him actually having cancer, or a false positive result, meaning he does not actually have cancer. these are risks linked to cancer screening.

25
what is a biopsy. what is staging and grading
-a biopsy is an incision in which a piece or tumor is taken out for viewing under a microscope -grading is to see how well they are differentiated, how closely they look to normal cells. based how aggressive cells look, how fast it may be growing -staging is looking at how severe the cancer is or if it has metastases, if it has grown and spread
26
infiltrative
extending beyond normal tissue boundaries
27
metastases
spread of malignant tumor to a secondary site
28
infiltrative
extending beyond normal tissue boundaries
29
provide 3 points on what the TNM results above mean
T2NOMO T2- the tumors size is between 2-5 cm NO - tumour has not spread to lymph nodes MO- the tumor has not metastasized
