Definition of a treaty
a signed agreement between 2 or more parties

Reasons for misunderstanding of the treaty
- 2 dif cultures and languages meant 2 dif ideas on what it said

- by 1858 more pakeha in nz than maori they were scared they were gonna be swept away
- they were scared land was going to be taken so they put it under protection of their king

- the cause was that when governor grey wanted to take possesion of a block of land he only spoke to and dealt with one chief
- the war lasted 1 year and the land was eventually returned

- govenor grey wanted more land and for the maori to submit to the crown
- he thought kingitanga was going to attack auckland so he attacked their land
- british troops were joined by some maori
- british had over 14000, kingitanga had 5000

land confiscation
- was a punishment for maori who rebelled, was often wrongfully taken as they got it wrong
- after 1863 waikato wars over 3 million acres were lost
- when the treaty was signed the maori had over 66 million acres since then almost 97%has been taken
- native land courts were established in 1865 to distribute land among iwi members. More land ended up being lost

- captain stewart of the ship elizabeth
- helped te rauparaha and 100 of his warriors get to tamaiharanui and ngai tahu
- 50 maori including tamaiharanui were either killed or enslaved
- as a result a petition went to britian asking for protection. james busby was sent
- the declaration of independence was made 1835
