Soc10 Flashcards
What are the 8 different types of injuries?
Strain(Tendon or muscle)
Torn cartilage
Concussions
Abrasions
Fractures
Dislocation
Soft tissue injury (muscle, ligament or tendon)
Sprain (ligament)
What is a soft tissue injury?
They are particlularly prone injury because movement outside of their normal range.
How can a soft tissue injury occur?
They can be a tear or overstretched tendons and ligaments
What is a sprain?
A sprain is a damaged ligament
How can a sprain occur?
When stretching too far past the normal range of joint
What is a strain?
A strain is a twist, pull or tear of a muscle or a tendon most common in back and hamstring
How can a strain occur?
Tendons are inflamed due to overuse, causing pain on the outside of the elbow
What is a torn cartilage?
A firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones
How can torn cartilage occur?
Damage to cartilage often occurs due to wear and tear from long-term overuse
What is fractures?
Is a broken or a cracked bone
How can fractures occur?
Stress - overuse
Closed - the skin over the break is not closed
Simple - no displacement of the bone
Compound - protudes through the skin
What is dislocation?
When it is forced out of its normal position
How can dislocation occur?
Often occurs as a result of a hard blow
What are abrasions?
Can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surfaces
How can abrasions occur?
Can occur froma tackle or just falling over during a game of football, rugby or hockey
What is concussion?
An impact to the head causes unconsciousness, confusion or memory lose
How can concussion occur?
Normally caused by a blow to the head and can happen in many sports
What are the 5 injury preventions?
1) correct application of the principles of training
2) correct apllication and adherence to the rules
3) use appropriate protective clothing
4) checking equipment and facilities
5) use of warm-up snd cool-down
What does RICE stand for?
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
What is Rest?
Stop playing or training
What is the use of ice?
The cold can provide pain relief and limits swelling by reducing blood flow to the injured area
What is compression?
Use pressure to hold the ice pack on the injury. This also limits swelling
What is elevation?
Raise the injury. If possible keep the area at or above the level of the injured person’s heart as this will minimise swelling
Ligaments
Are elastic fibres that join one bone to another
Tendons
Are non-elastic fibres that attach muscle to bone and help to move them
