Soc 9 Injuries And Preventing Injury Flashcards
What are 5 different ways to prevent injury ?
Selecting appropriate training methods Warming up/ cooling down Protective equipment/ clothing Checking equipment and facilities Playing to the rules and competition
What are the 8 different types of injuries ?
Fractures Strains Abrasions Concussion Dislocation Soft tissue injury Sprain Torn cartilage
What is a concussion and how is it caused ?
Concusions are usually caused by heavy blows to the head
Symptons can be headaches and loss of balance
What are the 4 different types of fractures ?
In closed
Compound fracture
Simple fracture
Stress fracture
What is an inclosed fracture ?
The skin over the break is not damaged
What is a compound fracture ?
The fracture extends beyond and through the skin
What is a simple fracture ?
Takes place on one line and no displacement of bone
What is a stress fracture ?
Overuse of injuries and can happen as a result of fatigue
What is a dislocation and what are the symptons?
When a bone or joint is forced out of it’s normal position. Often results from a hard blow
Symptons are swelling and deformity of the joint
What is a torn cartillage ?
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. It absorbs the impact on the bones while reducing the friction during sports/ activity.
Damage to cartilage often occurs due to wear and tear from long-term overuse.
What is a soft tissue injury ?
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They are particular prone injury because movement past the range can tear or pull tendons and ligaments.
What is a strain ?
A strain is a twist, pull or tear of a muscle or a tendon (while a sprain is an injury to a ligament).
What is a sprain and what are the symptons ?
A strain is a damaged ligament and occurs when stretching past the normal range of joint. Symptons include swelling
What is an abrasion ?
Abrasions or grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface e.g. a concrete playground or artificial pitches.
Can occur from a tackle or just simply falling over during a game of; football, rugby or hockey.
