Soc 18 Anaerobic And Areobic Respiration Flashcards
Formula for respiration
Glucose + oxygen ——-> carbon dioxide + water + energy
Formula for anaerobic respiration
Glucose ——> energy + lactic acid
What is glucose
A major source of energy for most cells in the body
What is anaerobic respiration
The process of releasing energy from glucose, without oxygen
What is areobic respiration
The process of releasing energy from glucose, using oxygen
What is areobic exercise ?
Working at a moderate intensity allowing the body time to ulitlise oxygen for energy production and to work for a continous period e.g, long distance events
What is lactic acid ?
A colouless acid produced in muscle tissues during strenuous exercise when the body is exercising anaerobicly at high intensity
What is cramp ?
Painful, involuntary contraction of the muscle due to fatigue
Where does energy come from ?
Energy comes from a range of different foods such as carbohydrates and fats
What is the main source of energy ?
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for high intensity exercise
What type of food provide energy for low - intensity exercise for long periods
Fats
What are the 2 types of carbohydrates
Complex and simple
What foods will you find complex carbohydrates ?
Bananas, brown rice, whole meal bread, whole meal pasta, nuts and potatoes
What type of foods will you find simple carbohydrates
Fruit and vegetables
What will happen in you eat a meal too close to a training session or competition ??
The blood will be directed away from your muscles and towards your digestive system which means your blood isn’t getting the required oxygen needed for respiration causing a build up in lactic acid
