What is commercialisation?
Making something available on the market; using something to make a profit.
What is media?
The main means of mass communication (television, radio, newspapers and internet).
What is deviance?
Behaviour that falls outside the norms or what is thought to be acceptable; goes against the moral values or laws of the sport.
What is negative deviance?
Deviance that has a detrimental effect.
What is positive deviance?
Deviance where there is no intention to cause harm or break the rules.
What is sportsmanship?
Qualities of fairness, following the rules, being gracious in defeat or victory.
What is gamesmanship?
Bending the rules/laws of a sport without actually breaking them.
How has commercialisation changed sport?
Commercialisation has developed as sport has become more professional - where people are paid to play.
How has media coverage affected sport?
Increased media coverage has meant that sport has become more commercialised.
What are the three elements of the ‘golden triangle’ in modern sport?
Sport, media, and business/sponsorship.
Why are sport, media, and business closely linked?
They are closely linked because the media and business/sponsorship invest significant amounts of money into sport.
