Soc 16 The Structure Of Blood Vessels/Heart Flashcards
Veins
.viens carry deoxygenated blood into the heart
.viens are less elastic walls
Capillaries
• microscopic vessels- one cell thick
• At one end, capillaries carry oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrient to the muscles (e.g. waiter)
• at the other end they carry deoxygenated blood into the veins picking up waste products, taking them around the body to dispose of the
• Capillaries are where gaseous exchange takes place
Arteries
Take blood away
Have thick walls and are more elastic than veins as they carry blood which is a high pressure than as they carry oxygenated blood
The channel the blood flows throughcalleebthe lumen can widen to allow more blood through when you so tyatbwhen you excersize it can reach the working muscles
Erythocyte
Red blood cell
Haemoglobin
A red protein in the blood that transports oxygen
Anaemia
A condition where there is a lack of red blood cells or heamoglobin in the blood
Immune system
The structures and processes in your body that stop disease
Leukocyte
White blood cells
Pathogen
An agent that causes disease such as a virus
Thrombokinase
Substance involved in blood clotting
Antibody
Chemical that destroys a pathogen
Serotonin
Hormone that triggers the clotting process
Plasma
The fluid part of blood
