Soc-20 lever systems Flashcards
What is a lever
A system of muscles and bones working together to bring about a movement
What is the effort (levers)
The force applied by the user of the lever system. The effort it supplied by the muscles
What is the fulcrum
The point which the lever rotates around (joint)
What is the load
A force applied by the lever system. The load is the object you want to move
What is the lever arm
A rigid bone
What is a first class lever
Fulcrum is in the middle
What is a second class lever
Load is in the middle
What is a third class lever
Effort is in the middle
Give an example of a second class lever in sport, as well as each part eg fulcrum
Going for a header in football, as you leave the floor your fulcrum is your toe, the effort is the gastroneumius and the load is your bodyweight
Give an advantage and disadvantage of first class levers
Stable, strong, increased length of lever arm increases the mechanical arm
Slow, limited flexibility
Give an advantage and disadvantage of second class levers
Stable, strong, increasing length of lever arm
Slow, limited availibility
Give an advantage and disadvantage of third class levers
Fast movement, long range of motion
Effort must exceed the load
