Soc-14 The Muscular System Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscles?
Voluntary, involuntary, cardiac
What is a voluntary muscle
Muscles that are under your control, you can choose to contract and relax them
What is a involuntary muscle
Muscles that are not under your control, they relax and contract automatically by the nervous system. They are found in the circulatory system and carry red blood cells to muscles
What is a cardiac muscle
A muscle only found in the wall of the heart, very specialised type of involuntary muscle. They spread electronical signals from the brain to the heart so all the cells can contract together. This regulates the heart rate
What are the 3 structures of muscle
Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle
For muscle functions see goodnotes
K
What is a antagonistic pair
An antagonistic pair is muscles that work together to create movement
What are three antagonistic pairs
Quads and hamstring
Tibalis anterior and gastronemius
Bicep and tricep
What are the characteristics of a type 1 muscle fiber
A slow twitch muscle fibre that is suited to low intensity work, eg marathon running. These fibres can work for hours
What are the characteristics of a type IIa muscle fibre
A fast twitch muscle fibre used in anaerobic work, tend to run out of energy quickly
What are the characteristics of type IIx muscle fibres
A fast twitch fibre used in anaerobic work but can generate much greater force than other fibre types
Slow twitch fibre (type 1) is what colour
Dark in colour because of hymoglobin and have a good O2 supply
Fast twitch fibre (type 2a and 2x) is what colour
Lighter in colour because they don’t use O2 to make energy
How does the skeletel and muscular system work together
The muscular system is composed of more than 600 muscles, including the involuntary muscles of the heart, the smooth muscles of the internal organs and the skeletal muscles. All of the muscles are connected to the nervous system which allows movement to start through signals from the brain
What is the name of the bone that does not move
Point of origin
