Soc 16: The Structure of the Blood Vessels and Blood Distribution Flashcards
Vital capacity
The greatest amount of air that can be passed into and out of the lungs by most forceful inspiration and expiration
Tidal volume
The amount of air inspired and expired with each normal breath at rest or during exercise
Stroke volume
The amount of blood pumped by the heart in one beat
Cardiac output
The amount of blood pumped by the heart in one min
Equation for cardiac output
Stroke volume x heart rate
What muscles contract and lift you chest outwards when inspiring/inhaling
The intercostal muscles
What happens to your diaphragm when you breath in
The shape of the diaphragm changes from a dome shape to a flatter shape. It relaxes when we breath out
What process happens at the alveoli
Gaseous exchange
The alveoli is surrounded by which blood vessel
Capillaries
What happens in gas exchange
The air in the lungs travels from the mouth all the way to the alveoli, the deoxygenated blood which is arriving from the pulmonary artery collects the oxygen with the haemoglobin. The blood retreats back to the lungs
What is oxygen debt
The result of anaerobic exercise, oxygen debt is the amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down all the lactic acid.
