Slow twitch (type 1) muscle fibres
Suit endurance activities - can work for longer periods of time
They’re darker in colour because they contain myoglobin, a red pigment that transports oxygen to the working muscles
Fast twitch (type 2) muscle fibres
Type 2a - used in anaerobic work which can be improved through endurance training. Increase their resistance to fatigue.
Type 2x - used in aerobic work which can be improved through endurance training
