Flexion
Bending movement that increasescangle between body parts
Joints that provide it- shoulder, hip, elbow
Examples in sport- someone working out in the gym bends their arm up when doing a bicep curl
Extension
Straightening movement that increases angle between body parts
Joints that provide it- shoulder, hip
Examples in sport- a swimmer swings up the arm backwards in prep for a racing dive
Adduction
Movement that pulls towards the midline of the body
Joints that provide it- shoulder, hip
Examples in sport- a golfer on the tee swings the club down towards the ball
Abduction
Movement that pulls away from the midline of the body
Joints that provide it- shoulder hip
Examples in sport- a gymnast moves their arms sideways at the shoulder when performing a move
Rotation
Movement around a single axis at a pivot point
Joints that provide it- shoulder, hip
Examples in sport- a tennis player serves
Circumduction
Moving in a circular or a conical shape
Muscles that provide it- shoulder, hip
Examples in sport- a cricketer bowls a ball
Dorsi-flexion
Bending or flexing the toes up, closer to the shin
Joints that provide it- ankle
Examples in sports- a sprinter positions their feet in the starting block
Plantar-flexion
Extending or pointing the toes down away from the shin
Joints that provide it- ankle
Examples in sport- a floor gymnast points their toes
Pivot joints
Allow bones to rotate. In a pivot joint one bone shaped like a cylinder rotates inside snother bone or ligament
Hinge joints
Allow backwards and forward motion
Knee, elbow, ankle
Ball and socket
The rounded head of a long bone fits into a cup shaped hole
Condyloid joints
Similar to ball and socket but the ball rests againgst the end of the bone allowing circular motion
