Small Animal Intestinal Parasites Flashcards
How do you diagnose nematodes?
Fecal flotation with zinc centrufigation
What are the types of nematodes?
- Roundworms
- Hookworms
- Whipworms
What is the most common roundworm in dogs and cats?
Toxocara canis
What is the zoonotic disease caused by roundworms?
ocular larval migrans
How do you treat roundworms?
Piperazine
Pyrantel
Fenbendazole
How are roundworms transmitted?
Fecal to oral or transplacental
Where do roundworms live?
small intestine
What is the most common species of hookworm?
Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala
What is the zoonotic disease caused by hookworms?
cutaneous larval migrans
How do you treat hookworms?
fenbendazole and pyrantel
What does hookworm cause?
hemorrhagic diarrhea and severe anemia
How is hookworm transmitted?
fecal to orall
transmammary
percutaneous infections
What is the most common whipworm?
Trichuris vulpis
How is whipworm transmitted?
fecal to oral
What does whipworm cause?
hyperkalemia and hypernatremia
Where do whipworms live?
Large intestine
What is the most common way to diagnose whipworms?
Have bipolar plugs on the ends
How do you treat whipworms?
fenbendazole or milbemycin
What are cestodes?
tapeworms
What are the most common tapeworms?
- Dipylidium caninum
- Echinococcus granlosus
- Taenia
What is the intermediate host of Dipylidium caninum?
flea
How is Dipylidium caninum spread?
Swallowing of the flea during grooming
How are Echinococcus granulosus and Taenia spread?
Ingestion of infected hyatid cysts during predation of small animals
Describe tapeworms
flat and segmented, resemble a grain of rice
Were are the eggs in tapeworms?
In the flat segments
What are the flat segments of tapeworms called?
proglottids
How is tapeworm diagnosed?
Usually through seeing the segments in the feces?
Why is tapeworm not easily diagnosed on a fecal float?
The eggs are not always seen unless a proglottid breaks open
What is the treatment for tapeworms?
Praziquantel (Drontal and profender)
What are trematodes?
Flukes
What is the most common fluke?
Fasciola hepatica
What animals are flukes most commonly found in?
Sheep or cattle that have been grazing in endemic areas
What is the intermediate host of the fluke?
snail so common in moist areas
How do you treat flukes?
albendazole
What is giardia?
flagellated protozoan or trophozoite
How is giardia transmitted?
Fecal to oral usually through contaminated water
What does giardia cause?
watery diarrhea
Is giardia zoonotic?
Controversial as most species are specific to cats and dogs but should be treated as zoonotic
How is giardia treated?
Fenbendazole or metronidazole
How is giardia diagnosed?
Cysts can be seen on fecal float but Giardia ELISA test most accurate or trophozoites could be seen on direct smear of fecal sample
What is coccidia?
single celled intestinal microscopic parasite
What is the most common coccidian in cats and dogs?
Isospora
What is the most common coccidia seen in birds and rabbits?
Eimeria
How do you treat coccidia?
Sulfadimethoxine
What does eimeria cause?
