What do large strongyles cause?
significant cause of intestinal disease in horses which may result in colic, diarrhea, and/or chronic weight loss
What is the equine tapeworm?
Anoplocephala perfoliata
What does anoplocephala cause?
colic and ulcerations of the mucosa
What is the roundworm of the horse?
Parascaris equorum
What does parascaris cause?
diseases in foals including ill thrift, poor weight gain, and intestinal impaction but not a significant parasite of the adult horse
What are the small strongyles?
Cyathostomes and have 40 species
What is the disease of cyathostomes called?
Larval cyathostomiasis
What do cyathostomes do?
Significant diarrhea, weight loss, hypoproteinemia, and possibly death
When are cyathostomes common?
Late winter or spring
What is the equine lung worm?
Dictyocaulus arnfieldi
When is the equine lung worm commonly seen?
In donkeys and mules or horses that have come into contact with them
Signs of equine lung worm?
Bronchial inflammation and chronic cough
What parasite can mimic a respiratory parasite?
Parascaris equorum in foals because it migrates through the lung
What does Ivermectin treat?
Large and small strongyles, roundworms, and bots
