What is the kicking range of a horse rear feet?
up to 8 feet
What side should you approach a horse on?
“near side” aka left side
What is cross tying?
used to prevent a horse from rearing or moving from side to side
What are stocks?
Narrow stalls with removable or semi open sides and a gate at both ends.
What are stocks used for?
Rectal or uterine examinations or access the head
What are blindfolds?
Can be sued to control a stubborn or fearful horse
What are hobbles?
Fitted around the hocks with web or leather straps and then tied to a neck strap or rope passed between the horses legs. Rarely used anymore.
What are twitches?
distract the horse from procedures by applying a mild pain to the upper muzzle.
Chain, humane, or rope can be used
What is the eyelid press?
Distraction technique involving placement of the fingers on the upper eyelids and lightly applying pressure can be used when giving injections
What is the shoulder roll?
Grasp a large fold of skin just over the shoulder with both and hands and wiggling it from side to side or upto down. Works well for IV injections
What are other ways to distract a horse?
Heavy swats or rotating the base of the ear in a small circle
