Shoulder girdle muscles Flashcards
What are the four rotator cuff muscles ? (SITS)
The four rotator cuff muscles include the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis.
What muscle abducts arm?
Deltoid
What muscle mainly moves the scapula ?
Trapezius
But the serratus anterior rotates it
Where do the rotator cuff muscles sit ?
Proximal humerus.
Capsule. Forms a band around the humeral head. This adds greatly to the capsule’s strength and joint stability.
Which rotator cuff abducts & depresses the humeral head.
What test can be done for it ?
Supraspinatus
Empty can test
Which two rotator cuff muscles are essential for external rotation?
Infraspinatus & Teres Minor
Which rotator muscle is important for internal rotation of the arm ?
What is the test called that can be done ?
Subscapularis
Lift off test
What movements can the scapula do ?
Types:
Elevation/ depression
Protraction/ retraction
Rotation
What is the role of the serratus anterior muscle ?
The serratus anterior, also known as the “boxer’s muscle,” is largely responsible for the protraction of the scapula, a movement that occurs when throwing a punch
Which nerve innervates the serratus anterior ?
The long thoracic nerve innervates the serratus anterior.
If this nerve becomes damaged, the scapula protrudes out of the back when pushing with the arm. The long thoracic nervecan become damaged by trauma to the shoulder, repetitive movements involving the shoulder or by structures becoming inflamed and pressing on the nerve. Long thoracic nerve palsy is thought to most commonly occur fromtraction injuries, where the upper limb is stretched violently.
What is this ?
What nerve is damaged
What muscle is not innervated
how is it usually called ?
Winged scapula due to long thoracic nerve palsy
Long thoracic nerve
Serratus anterior
Traction injuries ( eg the limb is stretched violently)
What joints are passively moved when by the movement of the scapula ?
Acriomioclavicular joint
Sternoclavicular joint
