Muscle Physiology- Strucure of muscle Flashcards
What is the gastrulation process ?
Gastrulation is a process of cellular rearrangement which involves migration, invagination and differentiation of the epiblast.
The formation of three germs laters
1- Ectoderm (outer layer)
2- Mesoderm (middle layer)
3- Endoderm (Inner layer)
When does gastrulation take place ?
3rd week of gestation
What layer during gastrulation does the muscle development from ?
Mesoderm
What do sclerotomes form ?
Bones
When does the development of bone and muscle begin ?
Development of bone and muscle begins at week 4 of gestation.
What does skeletal muscle form from ?
Skeletal muscle forms from somites.
What are dermatomes ?
-An area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve.
-It can be used to locate sessions within the central nervous system.
What should the maternal diet be high in ?
What happens if its not high in this ?
- Mother needs protein
-Low protein leads to low numbers of muscle fibres, affecting postnatal growth and development.
What are the three types of muscle ?
Skeletal Muscle – Voluntary, striated, multinucleated.
Smooth Muscle – Involuntary, unstriated, uninucleate.
Cardiac Muscle – Involuntary, striated, branched, uninucleate, contained intercalated discs (making it a functional syncytium).
What is the epimysium ?
Entire muscle is covered by epimysium
What is the perimysium?
Perimysium – Covers the Fascicles
What is the fasciles ?
Fascicles – The Muscle is made up of Fascicles.
What is the endomysium ?
Each fascicle contains lots of muscle fibres and is covered by endomysium.
What are myofibrils ?
Each muscle fibre contains many myofibrils, including thick and thin filaments.
