What symptoms may you get with anylosing spondylitis ?
- Young
- Pain gets better with exercise and movement
- Reduced chest expansion
What is ankylosing sponylitis ?
Ankylosing means the bones have fused together so theres stiffness.
Chronic systemic inflammatory disease – affects axial skeleton
May have extra-skeletal manifestations
Starts in late teens/ early 20’s (10 % FH)
Onset of back pain often slow and insidious
What blood tests would you do for Ankylosing spondlytis ?
Inflammatory markers vs HLA-B27
How would you diagnose ankylosing spondylitis ?
nflammatory markers vs HLA-B27
and MRI
How would you treat ankylosing spondlylitis ?
Intense physiotherapy
NSAIDS; DMARDs; Anti-TNF biologicals
What would you see on an MRI for ankylosing spondilitis ?
- Inflammation of joints and fusion of bones
- Bamboo spine
