Applied anatomy of UL - joints Flashcards
What is this ?
Does it usually dislocate ?
Why can it cause threat to life ?
Sternoclavicular joint
Rarely dislocated
One of the few upper limb injuries that can cause an immediate threat to life. It can give rise to cough, hoarseness and even pneumothorax or tracheal compression. These dislocations are usually associated with severe pain.
What ligaments attach the clavicle and acromium to the coracoid process ?
Collectively, the conoid and trapezoid ligaments are known as thecoracoclavicular ligament. It is a very strong structure, effectively suspending the weight of the upper limb from the clavicle.
How to treat a AC joint disruption ?
Generally respond favourably to conservative management:
Ice, a sling for 1-3 weeks andanalgesia/non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) followed by physiotherapy to strengthen muscles and ligaments after the acute phase.
What does the painful arch test show ?
This test is commonly used to identify possible subacromial impingement syndrome
