Myasthenia Gravis Flashcards
In Myasthenia junction what is its issue ?
Issue with the neuromuscular junction
Our antibodies damage the ACH receptors
At what age do people develop Myasthenia Gravis
Affects primarily women from 20-40 years of age
Affects more men from 50-60 years of age
What causes Myasthenia Gravis ?
Autoimmune
Our antibodies attack the neuromuscular junction
In particular it damages the ACH receptors
In myasthenia gravis, our antibodies damage the ACH receptors; what is the consequence of this?
Decrease in ACH receptors:
As the receptors are destroyed, the Ach present cannot act upon them and cause an action potential, so the muscle fibre does not contract
What are the signs and symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis ?
How do you diagnose Myasthenia Gravis?
What is a myasthenia crisis ?
Progression to respiratory muscles causes death via respiratory failure or myasthenic crisis.
What is the treatment for myasthenia gravis ?
Is myasthenia gravis a presynaptic or post-synaptic condition?
Post synaptic condition
