Serous Membranes Flashcards
Serous Membranes (definition)
Thin continuous layer of fluid secreting cells that line all cavities and organs
Visceral serous membranes (visceral serosa)
cover all body organs
visceral pleura, visceral pericardium, visceral peritoneum
Visceral Pleura
membrane covering the lungs
Visceral Pericardium
membrane covering the heart
Visceral Peritoneum
membrane covering all abdominal organs
Parietal Serous Membranes (parietal serosa)
cover and line all body cavities
Parietal pleura
membrane lining the pleural cavity
Parietal pericardium
membrane lining the pericardial cavity
Parietal peritoneum
membrane lining the abdominopelvic cavity
Mediastinum
the space within the thoracic cavity which lies between the pleural cavities
Contains pericardial cavity and portions of the trachea, esophagus, thymus, major arteries, and lymph vessels which pass through
