Semester 1 Exam Flashcards
The branch of science that deals with the structure of body parts, their forms, and how they are organized
Anatomy
concerns the functions of body parts, what they do and how they do it
Physiology
What are the levels of organization in order?
Atom, molecule, macromolecule, cell, organelles, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
Particles formed by molecules combining in a complex way
Macromolecules
Composed of aggregates of macromolecules; carry out certain activities
Organelles
All of the chemical reactions in cells that break down or build up substances
Metabolism
Condition of a stable enviornment
Homeostasis
the fluid surrounding body cells
Internal environment
maintains homeostasis though a number of self regulating control system
Homeostatic mechanisms
provide information about specific conditions in the internal environment
Receptors
tells what a particular value should be
Set point
cause responses that alter conditions in the internal environment
Effectors
process by which changes cause additional similar changes, producing unstable condition
Positive feedback
mechanism activated by an imbalance that corrects the imbalance
Negative feedback
Allows some molecules in and out of cell
Selectively permeable
