Passive Mechanisms Flashcards
Carrier molecules transport substances across membranes from a region of high concentration to low concentration
Facilitated diffusion
Process by which molecules or ions scatter or spread spontaneously from regions of high to low concentration
Diffusion
Movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane from a high to low concentration of water
Osmosis
The amount of pressure needed to stop osmosis
Osmotic pressure
A solution with the same osmotic pressure
Isotonic
A solution with the lower osmotic pressure than the solution which it is compared to
Hypotonic
A solution with greater osmotic pressure than the solution with it is compared
Hypertonic
Move particles from a region of low concentration to high concentration; requires energy
Active transport
Cell membrane envelops a substance and draws it into the cell in a vescicle
Endocytosis
Transport of substances out of a cell in membrane bounded vescicles
Exocytosis
Process by which a cell engulfs and digests solids
Phagocytosis
Process by which a cell engulfs droplets of fluid from it’s surroundings
Pinocytosis
Same shape that communicates with other similar shapes that let’s certain particles through
Receptor meditated Endocytosis
