Section 7: The role of technology in physical activity and sport Flashcards
Define research
a systematic process of investigation and study carried out with the aim of advancing knowledge
What is sports analytics?
the analysis of sport data using analytical tools and methods for data to be subjected to analytical procedures in order to try improve results
What is qualitative data?
generally focused on words as opposed to numbers, the data collected is subjective as it looks at feelings, opinions and emotions
What is quantitative data?
a formal, objective and systematic process used to gather data that is factual and numerical
Define objective data
fact-based information which is measurable and usable
Give an example of objective data
the level achieved on the multi-stage fitness test which links to a VO2 max score
Define subjective data
data based on personal opinion which is less measurable and often less usable
What is video motion analysis?
a technique used to get information about moving objects from video
What is sport analytics used for?
- to gather new, meaningful statistical information on player performance and/or game details
- to consider how this information can be synthesized and summarized into key points which help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of performance
What can be measured by analytic equipment for performers measuring their fitness?
- calories burned
- heart rate
- distances covered in training
- pace of running
- sleep statistics
- calorie input and output
State 5 reasons sport analytics is used
- to measure fitness
- skill development and technique
- injury prevention
- game analysis
- talent ID/ scouting
Stat the benefits of vibration therapy for injury prevention
- improves bone density
- increases muscle mass
- improving circulation
- reduced joint and back pain
- reducing stress
- boosting metabolism
- reduction in pain/ delayed DOMS
What is electrostmulation?
where electrodes are attached to the skin and send small impulses to the muscles without the use of the CNS or the brain
State the benefits of electrostimulation
- increase in muscle strength
- improvement in recovery time
- promotes blood flow during warm up
- helps performer train harder
- assists in rehabilitation after injury
- helps prevent muscle atrophy during rehabilitation
What quantitative data can be gathered during a game analysis?
- speed
- distance covered
- location on pitch
- acceleration
