Tip on how to hook the ball. After impact, catch the raindrop with your left hand, palm up on FT. I really need this. So many times Ballwin Hole #1 drive is to the right in trees. #2 in trees, #4 par 3 in creek to right, #9 goes right of green.
Tip: On any club, especially the Driver, everything else can be perfect. But, if your impact is on the heel of CF, the ball will slice!
Here is one countermeasures not to impact heel impact with Driver.
- Keep weight off balls of feet and off toes. Weight SB under shoelaces on arches of feet.
- Setup distance to ball. If I am setup too close to ball I will be prone to hit with heel.
Path: Note: in to out SB just a few degrees < 10 degrees.
Also make a aiming stake off the ground a foot or so then practice coming under that stake to hit your practice ball. This stops hitting over the top. This swing is very slowly going under alignment rod hit ball then FF very high.
Tom Watson’s DVD says Jack Nicklaus’ method to hook is to setup to ball, then close the face somewhat and regrip. Now hit your hook.
Professor Martin Hall says “The perfect golf swings have 7 attributes of hooking and drawing while only 2 attributes are in slicing. Learn to hook it.
SOG Jan. 2018
This is a drill for checking that you do not reverse pivot or sway on your swing. You use a piece of 2 x 4 about 8 inches long laying on its narrow side so the broad sides can be easily seen in front or behind your setup stance.
Top is painted yellow.
Behind setup is painted white.
In front of setup is painted Red. “Red is dead”. You do not want to see any red. You want to see all yellow with just a sliver of white at the very top of your BS.
At the very end of your FF you may catch a sliver of Red.
To do this drill, place a practice ball enough distance in front of it so you will not hit the piece of wood.
On your setup, the shaft of the golf club should be pretty much in line with the top of the wood yellow paint.
This also teaches you to rotate your body around your head in a tight circle. So watch the ball and wood as you perform this drill.
It should be a great drill for making better shots!
Start off doing this drill at 30% speed and work up to regular swing speed.

SOF Wedges 2/20/18
Soft grass: use more bounce.
Soft sand: use more bounce.
Firm lie: no bounce.
Firm sand: no bounce.
On address: 1: If toe is off the ground you will hit very left pull.
Use range laser at driving range to dial in wedges.
Range results 12/16/17
BAD: Caught myself transferring weight to left toe instead of L. heel.
BAD: Still forgetting to pivot then swing. Many times I finish shot and I have centered weight on both feet.
BAD: 5 and longer irons still tail slicing right, reason no pivot and over the top DS.
February 2018 new ideas that work.
- SWING SLOWER. Make contact. Body rhythm will supply the power!
- Line up BS path visually and hold path rather than just swinging back with shoulder turn. This keeps ball from pulling and slicing.
- Transition drop club completely horizontal before even starting to swing. Next start swing with Right Quadricep hitting the ball. This forces me to pivot. So I hit with Right Quad first, then kiss my knees. Kissing my knees prevents me from straightening my left leg on the DS. If I straighten my left leg on DS, I am forcing the club to strike from outside in, resulting in the tail slice to the right. My left knee SB slightly bend towards the target.
- On woods and longer clubs. Address the club 2 balls behind the ball, this leaves a two ball space and stops me from skying the ball on drives. Works like magic!
- Make certain I use my rhythm pattern on every shot, like a baseball pitcher pumping his leg up.
- Be certain I cross over my forearms on DS to ball and catch the raindrop.
- Sand Wedge with grass pitches. Blade laid back and open. This makes it almost impossible to chunk it. The heel of the sand wedge will be aimed downward to contact bottom part of ball. This pops ball up nicely to land softly on green.
SOG 3/16/18 PUTTING
- When putting, face stays square to arc of putting stroke. Yes, longer putting strokes follow a gentle arc. They should not go straight back and forward.
- Cadence is important. “One potato, two” SB a great cadence for putting.
- Focus on entry point of hole when determining your putting line. Do not focus on the front of cup, unless that is the line.
- Here is HT determine your putting line. Go half way along the putt to the low side of the hole. Now look at ball and at hole then decide where you think the ball will enter the hole. This is the best read to find your line. Trust it when you are making your putt.
SOG 3/13/18 ARNOLD PALMER
Tip: Helicopter finish stops the hook everytime.
Tip Normal golf swing: Bowing gloved hand gives much power and stops slicing!
- Lead wrist (Gloved hand) must be bowed from beginning of TA into impact. Start of transition your gloved hand SB turned knuckles down into impact. At impact gloved hand SB bowed slightly, with knuckles pointed at target upon impact.
Tip keeping head still and down: On BS, turn your chest upward.
Tip on general swing: Keep weight on arches of feet. REM Golf loopy says keep weight on front of ankles.
Tip on grip: Gloved hand. Last three fingers on gloved hand hold most pressure on club. On my right hand, middle two fingers hold the most pressure on club.

For driving the ball further.
Connect “Pin” your left arm to your chest and maintain the connection there all the way back and through impact.
At Address: Kick in your right knee toward the target. This creates a stronger support system, fueling a bigger turn as you leverage the ground.
REM, Hogan said to address the ball knock “kneed”.
Putting: Line up the putt looking behind the ball, but when you stroke the putt, have your eyes directly over the ball for better feel.
Chipping and pitching: Rotate your chest. Forget your wrists. Focus on your chest, rotating it back and through so that by the time you reach your finish, your chest is pointing pretty much down the target line.
