2021 UPDATED Swing For Seniors Tips Part 2 Flashcards

NOTE. This info has been superseded. You don’t spin hard, that causes mishits. You create separation by completing transition and do the weight transfer to left leg pivot before you release your swing. This creates tons of power and control with WIDTH.

Getting very close now to a straight powerful shot.

The key change is to:

1: Keep left arm very straight. Do a stretch TA, back 3/4 to target and slow.
2: Now the new stuff. Start DS into transition very slowly, starting weight transfer and pivot. Right elbow is still inline with plane and folded tight. As I am going into impact, release, snap right elbow open a little to impact ball squarely.

Main idea is slow enough for great contact with the right elbow snap and lagging weight transfer, impacting LAG into the ball.

Feels like I am holding back the swing until my pivot is near completion and I am throwing the club at the ball.

If I do not over swing, the ball sails long and strong straight.

Pulls to the left.

Overview:

Problem is either path problem or a club face problem. In my case it is both.

My main problem is not getting left shoulder past the ball at impact. Not doing gravity drop to transition. Not bumping forward a little before I pivot. Playing ball too far forward, need to establish bottom of my swing and setup from there, means playing ball back in stance if I am hitting ground before the ball.

Also watched a video about approach to green.

MUST KEEP SPINE TILTED A LITTLE BACKWARD, OTHERWISE MY WEDGE WILL PULL TO THE LEFT. This is a good tip for all pitches, SW or square strike.

A

The video about throwing left shoulder past the ball before impact is the most important factor in not pulling.

Noticed all pro golfers kick out left knee on TA. Since they ALL do it, I should also incorporate it into my swing.

On transition, slightly pull grip thrusting left shoulder down swing path to forward position of left shoulder in front of ball. Aka Johnny Miller adage. DOING THE JOHN DALY PELVIS TURN FIXES TA and DS angles.

New tips that prevent pulls:

  1. Kick left knee out and find swing plane going up and down. WAGGLE to identify plane at setup.
  2. Going into transition, pivot PELVIS while going into impact. Time pelvis and impact to happen concurrently so all energy is transferred into ball. Start GUIDING grip to impact point and time pelvis AND CHEST to MEET BALL AT SAME TIME.
  3. Swing slow enough for all checkpoints to fully complete, then fire release.
  4. Hit shorter irons to green slower SO YOU DON’T PULL THEM. PW, 9,8,7,6. Use gravity drop to begin DS into transition.
  5. Key to hit straight is to do all the above , especially the timed PELVIS into release.
  6. First two holes, slow swings. Use your GO TO shots that always go straight, especially the first two drives!

8-3-20 Range.

  1. Learned to lead with left going into impact.
  2. Learned to impact with back of hand, knuckles to target. Sometimes referred to as bowed wrist. (Don’t need to use this most of the time)

These really make short irons go straight, esp. 8 iron. Also makes drives go left side of fairway.

8-17-2020 Range.

  1. Discovered that on all shots I should swing sidearm with right, rather than under or lined up with right forearm. This sidearm (SA) release makes ball go very straight and long. Works well on all clubs even fairway woods.
  2. Using SA release allows me to raise right elbow much higher on BS, with great long distance results.

REMEMBER, swinging hard equals loss of control.

Billy Mulligan started the MULLIGAN at Wing foot golf course. I should refer to my mulligans as “Take an Uncle Billy”. Or simply UNCLE BILLIES!

Wonderful Spin Pivot! This is latest and greatest!

8.29.20 Range.

Easy way to stop swinging from the top of BS.

  1. Before going into setup or the tee box, do a strict tension shoulder turn then rotate triangle half circle down leading with LEFT grip and shaft ON PLANE to the ball.

Do three of these slowly concentrated then setup to ball and shoot.

  1. Where the spin comes in is “ IN THE SLOT”.
    Making your shot:
    A. On your actual shot, starting at top of BS, slowly start concentrated rotation half circle. You ROTATE this part. You are not swinging at all, just concentrating on leading with your LEFT the grip on SHAFT PLANE for your half circle.

B. Your half circle slowly only begins to shift weight forward. It helps to think on rotating RIGHT shoulder down to enter the SLOT.

C. On actual swing, feel EXTENSION tension in triceps and left arm bicep glued to rib cage. Once you start rotating, start weight transfer, ascertain you are on swing plane, lock in focal point of contact on ball, start pivot and SPIN hard into impact.

Once everything is locked in, fire that hard spin into ball!

If you did everything right, you can hit ball hard or easy as you want and get beautiful shots.

A

Notes on spin movement.

  1. On my BS go ahead and stretch the tension, RIGHT elbow lifts up high. This gives spin movement way more power because I fire my right arm to start the spin movement (SM) putting all that power into impact.
  2. Remember to kick LEFT knee out on your TA!

SOG TIP. “PINCH AN INCH” . This refers to hit through the ball enough to make a divit one inch in front of ball.

9.13.20 To help form a visual image.

For Geri. DS rotation into TRANSITION on PLANE = THE SLOT.

The SLOT is your position/configuration when you release into IMPACT.

Your CLUB FACE will be hovering over the ground just like an airplane LEVELING off, coming in for a landing. The airplane does not dive bomb from the top. It levels out and descends with it’s NOSE up.

On the golf swing, you ROTATE downward, into TRANSITION and you are on PLANE. At this point you are in THE SLOT and you target where you are going to impact the ball.

So now you are ready to SWING/spin into impact. The golf shaft leads the CLUB FACE into impact and the follow through.

You are ROTATING start to finish on the golf swing. Your arms are only holding the club with built up TENSION. Left bicep is glued to your rib cage. Your arms are rotating with your body. You rotate through impact. You never try to swing/power your arms through impact.

Start your rotation very slowly then start picking up speed when you enter THE SLOT. Soon as you enter the SLOT, you RELEASE.

Aim for dead center of ball!

RELEASE means you release everything you have built up from the start of your swing. Finish weight transfer, pelvis rotation. Do a controlled SPIN into the ball with all your weight on your left side going into the ball.

Impact THROUGH the ball. Do not stop at the ball, crash through the ball!

Your swing will look like you are swinging a clock pendulum around your body.

A pendulum (left arm) stays straight the entire swing. If left arm is bent at impact, you threw away all your power and the entire swing structure.

9/19/20. Hitting short irons straight.

Change grip to Precision grip. Setup with CF heel off the ground.

Use Brian Dechambeau stiff arm TA, then hinge back as normal but only to 3/4 swing position.

Very important to glue left bicep to rib cage.

Make BS on plane with shaft at address.

Only make a 3/4 swing both back and FF. VERY important to only FF 3/4 and HOLD the position!

Everything else in swing is normal. TA, hinge, smaller leg pump and kiss, weight transfer. Try it at range then write heuristics.

A

START SWING WITH HIPS, THEN ROTATE THEN SHOULDER TURN. This should take care of pivot timing and solve my pivot timing problem.

I fondly call my new swing thought, “Pump & Pivot”! Works for me.

Latest steps for fixing pulls left and keeping max power.

September 30, 2020.

  1. Bryson TA, only 3/4 back if necessary. Later can try full turn.
  2. Pump and rotate.
    A. Relax tension left arm during rotation.
    B. Rotate SLOWLY weight and pivot slowly. Must allow time for left shoulder to get pass the ball.
    C. Lag snap. Calculate when to release and snap the impact. Like you are flicking a bug off.
Wrist and grip must be loose.

Grip must get past the ball before you release!

Beautiful when done correctly.

A

Played with Charlie. 83 long hitter and out drove me every hole.

He told me my head was swaying backward on my BS. He said body rotes around neck. I told him about my neck hurting from not swaying but he said I needed to fix it.

Then he said don’t look at my BS going back. Always eyes on ball.

Back home I found the fix. Turn head toward target and don’t look at BS. After a dozen foam balls I was able to do it without hurting neck.

Not pulling 5hybrid to par three.

I pull because my rotation is straight through the ball. I need to make it more on swing plane plus snap lag if possible. Practice this!

Excerpts from book, Finally tips from golf’s simple secrets.

1) . Move UPPER arms against sides of your chest at address so you form a tight V with arms. Knees SB a little knocked kneed.
2) . On a scale from 1 to 10, pressure on chest with arms SB a 4. Arms SB straighter than they were before, but still relaxed. Half your upper arms SB touching your chest.
3) . SOFT hands. Most amateurs grip the club too hard. With a hard grip, you push the ball instead of hitting it. MN: think of a buggy whip grip, poised to snap. Grip pressure SB a 3 out of 10.

A

4). Begin DS thinking about moving right elbow toward body. Make certain you can feel the lag like in a practice swing. You cannot have lag with a tight grip!

The faster you whip right elbow to body, the greater lag you are creating and the further you will hit the ball.

Thinking about moving right elbow to body will ensure you are making a good weight transfer.

5). On short pitches, 50 yards or less, do not turn your shoulders on BS. Only break your wrist for BS on short pitches. Do the same wrist only break on any half swings.
