Card 01: 3/25/21
5/26/21. What I was doing wrong and lost my rhythm. Frustrated!
- TA was straight vertical 6 to 12. SB on plane of the shaft! Snead follows the plane of shaft. He starts BS with a little forward press for a trigger.
- I completely forgot to rock my hips back and forth. SB right hip rotates back and up. Then rotates level and up for FF. I didn’t use any hip action! Completely forgot.
Snead really rocks the hips back and forth. - I didn’t rock back and forth on the sides of my feet! BS rocks inside of left foot and raise heel. DS rocks inside of right foot. SB rocking inside of both feet! Snead rocks his feet!
- Forgot to keep triangle and swing triangle throughout entire swing. Completely forgot to even think about triangle!
- Forgot to get left shoulder behind ball on my wind the clock 6 to 12 . Shoulder must get behind ball on TA or you can PULL and TOP the ball. On FF, shoulder must go past ball to prevent pulls, plus it makes great golf shots.
Pulling your shots. Hank Haney.
1. Common cause is ball is setup too far forward. Impact is on the upswing. This causes lots of topped balls also. Play it back more.
2. You are swinging over the top. This makes you hit outside of ball, pulling it left.
3. Your CF is closed at impact because you hit it fat.
Remember the Johnny Miller pull fix. Get left shoulder past the ball!
Clay Ballard. Don’t lean upper body toward fairway with swing. This closes CF. Lean (SPINE) upper body back especially with short iron to the green!
3/16/21. Range.
Pull fix: Don’t snap left hip toward target. This makes me spin out and PULL badly. Instead, as I am going into transition, park my butt backward slowly and time this parking butt with left heel touching ground again. So left heel up on BS, then back down on DS. TIME RELEASE just before heel touches ground.
Now new corrections:
1. Rotate SLOWLY into transition shifting weight back and heel falling back to ground. (I was swinging from top)
2. RETARD release during this rotation until heel is almost parked, then accelerate release into impact. Get your RIGHT SHOULDER down as you rotate into transition.
NOTE: right shoulder down gets ball very high and deep in the sky! NEVER HIT any shot with shoulders level, except putt.
GO AND SIN NO MORE! Latest corrections for great hits. 3/21/21
1) . Both arms straighten into full release.
2) . RH wrist stays back through impact. Do not flip RH WRIST! Keep the gap there like SOG.
3) . TA makes and keeps “L” at 0900. This keeps throughout entire TA. Rotates to parallel behind me at top of swing then rotates down through impact. Builds tremendous lag.
4) . On teed balls, setup shaft to left pant leg for lean right angle.
Next day was golf day. I pulled every drive badly, save two of them.
I was concentrating on forming the “L” in drive BS and making a deliberate release snap at the teed up ball. I researched in the yard later and discovered two mistakes.
1. Concentrating on the L, caused me to DS BELOW plane. This lower DS below plane makes the CF hook left before impact! This alone creates a hard pull hook.
2. Doing a forced release snap causes very poor solid contact. This is why a few drives just dribbled left off the tee.
So in the yard, I went back to watching the ball and making sure I swung on plane. Furthermore I discovered that simply starting my release coming thru transition makes the CF very square and a straight drive every time. No reason to force release, just natural like baseball swing.
So focus where it is most important, stay on plane and release early!
Range 4/30/21. Preface to Snead Dance.
My biggest faults:
- Swing from top.
- No rotation on TA or on transition. I call this TA=Wind the clock; DS=Rock around the clock.
- Shoulders even and square at impact.
- Knuckles release SB outward toward target, not FLINGING to the left on FF causing a pull. FLING straight out to fairway.
MNEMONICS:
- Wind clock to bookshelf.
- Get on horse & Rock the clock.
- (Left leg) Pedal to the metal and knuckles halfway down release.
- Wind shoulders to clock positions. Left to 6:00 then Right to 6:00. Don’t cross the parallel line target path. Clock positions force ball in air and prevent pulls on irons.
- Stiff arms, triceps glued to chest form triangle. Keep that triangle entire swing. Push hands away from your head entire swing.
- SUPER LIGHT GRIP PRESSURE for wrist snapping release. Prevents pushes to the right.
- FAST ACCELERATION right elbow to chest on release. Stay on plane. Forces drive straight.
- Retard DS. Feel sledgehammer (weight of club head) swing into release.
NOTES: This works on every shot and every club. Even 9 iron and wedges. Forces me to retard the release and put full weight into shot. Left leg over side of horse, pedal to metal gives ground force. Right leg slanted towards target gives me forward thrust!
Remember the entire swing is 95% SLOW until release. Plenty of time to go thru each checkpoint. Pace yourself!
These are discoveries that make my game much better. 6/1/21
- Use Snead’s inner and outer sides of feet in weight shift. Makes rhythm and shifting way easier.
- Left arm very straight. TRIANGLE very straight. Rotate and RETARD DS. REM to hinge up at halfway point of BS.
- Glue right bicep to chest on TA. This stops chicken wing.
- Green light on longer BS equals longer drives and iron shots! Take right arm much higher . Start swing slow, then just before left knee weight shift is completed, fire right arm HARD.
- On super hybrid, tee top is 4th line from the bottom.
- On all shots remember to place club first then position feet. Play the ball more back, like halfway between left heel and center of stance.
- Use a straight stance instead of the draw stance offset foot positions.
- Short irons, take a full swing if I like. If using a half swing, still raise right arm higher and FIRE that right arm timed to weight shift. Results SB the same half swing or full swing.
- Pitching. I can fluff up ball and hit under it or I can hit down ball against ground. Evaluate and choose which method.
Range 6/7/21.
I started out fairly good but soon my swings went to shit.
Main faults were.
- Swinging from the top instead of rotating shoulders down. Should make this major priority because I never realize I am not doing this.
- No rock the clock rotation matched with weight transfer.
- I completely forgot about hip rotation.
Need to practice shadow drills on the above and practice dropping into slot when left leg goes out. It really helps to keep weight on insides of feet like Snead. “Just let arms fall into slot and guide grip.”
Today I did a good job hitting V with arms straight.
July 15 2021: Finally figured out why I suddenly can’t hit teed balls.
Things I was doing wrong:
- Was not on plane. I was just taking club back and concentrating on TA with fold and 12-6 shoulder turn. Fix is to TA slightly to the inside.
- Was not making shoulder turn 12-6. My shoulders were level so the ball never gets in the air. Fix is to 12-6 turn but stay on plane entire swing.
- Caught myself casting to impact. Fix is to hinge wrist to 90 degree fold and keep that “V” for entire swing. Another clue is to hinge the hockey shot grip while I am all the way back then hold that obtuse angle through impact.
3b. To prevent casting remember the swinging V is rotated and led by the grip, throughout the entire “U” track of the swing. This will stop casting.
3c. Think of hitting impact with my R shoulder at impact helps move my weight forward throughout impact. Impact is through the ball. Don’t hit the ball and stop.
4. I still don’t transfer weight consistently. Need to practice shadow drills with knee and footwork. Also need to swing my hips back down and forward. I just swing them up and forget about the rest of swing.
5. I also want to mention swinging down plane line for solid impact. Else I will swing CF around ball and have bad pull or dribble off the tee box!
ONE MORE THING—Practice bringing R elbow down to body as I am moving weight forward. Do it gently. If too fast I will hit the ground and not the ball. Time it with weight going forward and both hands impact through ball at impact.
It works! July 17, 2021.
A fool-proof swing that does so many things right. Works perfectly on foam balls. I shall try it tomorrow night at range.
It’s such a problem for me to transfer weight forward. Usually I stand up on my right foot in DS, causing a topped ball, or I hit off-center on impact.
Got the idea watching Rick squat at address.
Overview. I use hips and left foot to go backwards into a squat. Holding all the tension, I slowly jump the squat forward.
While I start slowly to jump squat forward, I get shaft on plane. I rotate clock positions of shoulders from 6 to 12 as I slowly move squat forward. This satisfies transition and getting into the slot.
As I am getting closer to ball I bring my right elbow down to side like normal. Then I release everything into impact!
Since I am moving from squat position to FF position, I try to hit through impact with right shoulder!
This gives me an inclined runway through impact.
I try to time my right shoulder to impact so it feels like I teed off with my right shoulder.
With foam balls it works on any iron, hitting a wood off the deck or hitting a teed up drive. On irons I try to hit 1/2 inch behind ball. REM to swing woods slower!
Note. When I release to impact I add thrust with hips going forward on plane of shot.
To prevent casting, I rotate my shoulders 12 to 6. Before I setup, I remind myself that I do not swing my arms at all. I only guide them.
More to follow. Update. The squattie worked, but was hard to go through all the motions. Discovered a better way. It’s the squattie without the squat. I simply take about 3 COMPLETE warm up swings before going to setup. Then I TA with grip pointing direction of ball. Take club all the way back with hinged wrist and the big V is maintained. Right elbow folds back and I start DS MOTION strictly with weight shifting. Go through transition and swing right elbow UNDERHAND to impact. Looks like a pro and hits inside the hundred markers on par fours #3 and #5.
DRIVER HELP
Last couple of outings, terrible drives. I feel lost. It’s like I forgot how to hit a drive. Then, working with foam balls I discovered things I was doing wrong. Here are my observations:
- The driver is an up the ramp shot. The swing is completely different. It’s like Ramp whiplash. See, all the other shots are downswings to the ball. With a driver, you are swinging up a ramp. It’s an inclined plane.
No wonder I kept hitting the ball off the tee and straight into the ground.
- Driver swing is flatter than my irons. Driver shoulder turn is not 6 to 12. It’s more like 8 to 2. So make it a flatter shoulder turn. Arms no higher on BS than my right armpit.
- Driver is by far the longest club in the bag. It is long, so entire swing is much slower. In fact, stop right before transition and weight transfer. My fault is I was skipping the transition! I was casting the club. I discovered I was not pointing grip end at the ball going into impact. I was casting, throwing the side of my golf shaft into impact resulting in miserable drives.
- Also, I forgot to knuckles down into impact. So the ball gear actioned slice gear action.
Driver help!
5. The correct feeling swing thought is lead with grip from low right shoulder and body going upward to impact ball.
It feels like I am squatting down low and pulling my grip up the ramp so CF hits ball. So my swing starts while coming through transition into magic moment impact and FF.
- Keep grip pressure light and grip SB about half of the strong grip position. As I get more info I will add to this card.
Tie feet together. So many times my shot is ruined because when I kick my left knee forward on DS, I keep weight on my right foot. Then my body raises upward because of my right foot being weighted when it SB unweighted and pivoted forward and up on my right toes. Resulting in a topped ball!
The fix is to setup with right foot weight all on inseam. Then move BOTH FEET toward fairway on transition and DS. Practice this tying both feet movement together going forward. Do shadow drills indoors!
Right foot SB going upward and pivoting on toes with heel off the ground. ALL WEIGHT SB FORWARD!
Also, always lead with left arm going into impact. Too many times I am just impacting only with my right arm. Impact both arms, but lead with left.
To get more forward power into shot, pull on grip toward fairway. Remember Hogan saying form the shot leading with the grip.
10/20/21 Discovered HT make DS a simple Baseball swing coming out of my transition. I hold arms and swing the V into the ball. When hit correctly, makes my shots very high, long and powerful. Problem yesterday on my round I hit about four balls fat. I think I am over swinging with my right arm, causing the fat shot. Or it is possible that I am coming down to ball too steeply or too fast and hitting the ground with the V instead of the ball. Seems to work nicely on teed up drives. They go long. I’m going to the range to find a way to prevent this shot wrecking problem.
SEE NEXT CARD FOR UPDATE.
Went to range next day to test out baseball swing. It still works but I MUST make certain to lead with my left. Also I must keep focused on ball and where I am going to contact it.
Plus I am trying to implement my grip pull to full release. Still needs some work. It is very hard to do the BB swing, footwork, lead with grip, transfer weight forward etc and WATCH the ball. I am in the habit of not watching the ball. Instead I am watching my movements in the swing.
So far I’m disappointed in my super hybrid. My 5wood is much easier to hit and goes higher and further than the hybrid. Sometimes my 7 iron carries further.
I’ll just have to learn how to hit it faster, because of the regular shaft instead of the senior shaft. But those were the only ones in stock when I bought it. I know it can drive well, but my driver hits better and further.
2022 tips that calibrate my journey to the perfect swing.
- DRIVER and all clubs. Was swinging over top again with driver, making tail slice to the right.
THE FIX: Get shaft back on plane in TA. Most important is to BOW my left hand. Create the bow during BS hinge up. On DS, concentrate on bowed left hand and hold the bow through impact. This made every drive straight down the middle of fairway. - Twist UP, twist DOWN Action on BS and DS. THE TWISTING, BOWING and the left glute gets between legs on DS.
- Remember to start DS slow as your start on TA. Hold off on impact until weight is forward and right shoulder is angled down like I hit the ball with it. Remember, start swing nice and smooth.
