SOG Chapter 1

SOG Keep elbows close together throughout swing — p. 49 Hogan book. This means like the picture wrapped in saran wrap. So setup with elbows pressed into ribs. Then on BS extend elbows far from your head as possible. You want elbows and “V” to keep that triangle form throughout swing.

Q

(1) Drives.

The slower you swing, the farther the distance. So you want to coast into the ball, because it gives the CF more time to close!

A

My comment: I think this is why my drives when playing with Alan were bad. I was trying to accelerate more power into the ball. The result was terrible mishits, wormburners and bad tail slices!

Q

Hitting a Draw

(2) Aim a little right and feel arms coasting into the ball to hit a draw. TA and BS are quick then coast into ball. BTW Your right arm should not be flexed, but keep straight as possible.

CF must be closed a little to swing path.

Coast into ball, not accelerating!

A

A couple of tips:

Use a weak grip on left hand. The exact back of your **left glove should be pointing to the center of your desired path of ball. **

Both arms of steel should be rigid and stiff armed. Lead with your left, but power with your right inline with your chest turn.

Q

**Fade

CF must be a little open to the path and the target line must be a little left of straight.
TA and BS are slow. DS is quick, and quick with my chest turn.

Fade: Aim left and feel arms accelerate into ball to hit a fade.

Start DS with gentle hip and chest turn.

A

The very best players always keep the weight to inside of trail foot! Kick right knee and leg in a little to keep weight on trail foot.

On setup Kick in your right knee just a little and have all the weight on inside of right foot throughout the shot until chest turn begins.

**Book report: Solid Contact– Jim Hardy

When my drive goes in a straight line to right its a push. When drive goes a straight line to left its a pull.

Angle of approach: Angle CF is swinging up, down or level. Tee shot is a shallow angle. A wedge shot has a high angle of approach. (AOA)

The more CF strikes downward, the ball will slide up CF and fly high. A steep angle creates backspin.

A

A shallow angle of approach, makes a low flight and less spin.

Q

“Width of bottom of swing” Think of a driver swing having a bottom and two sides. The width of bottom is when CF is skimming along the bottom.

A

The amount of runway to land a large or small plane is analogous to width of bottom of swing.

Q

Loft of club. Low lofted CF is intended to meet ball at it’s equator. High lofted CF is intended to hit bottom of ball. A driver makes it easier to swing CF along ground and into equator of ball.

A

** A sand wedge** uses steep angle with narrow bottom. This allows swing CF down, under and back up again through the ball. Width of bottom is a “runway” for every club. You cannot land a 747 (width of bottom) with a sand wedge swing (width of bottom).

Q

P12. Problems occur when width bottom is too narrow or wide. If narrow, you will struggle with longer irons. If too wide, shorter clubs will give you trouble.

A

The four elements of impact:
1. Position of CF at impact
2. Club’s path through the ball
3. Angle of approach
4. Width of the bottom of swing (Runway)

Q

Most important, angle of approach and width of bottom of swing. These two elements are the keys to this book. Angle of approach, AOA goal is hitting ball flush. Width of bottom, WOB, goal is predictable ball flight.

A

P73. DS: 1. Thrust right hip toward ball.
2. Swing your arms and CF down and in to out.

General notes on Lies

Downhill lie: Must lean down slope just like a downhill skier.

A

Right hand in golf swing is exactly like painting the fence. (side ways).
Your cupped RH wrist must stay cupped through impact. Uncup it after impact.
