01: UPDATED 2022 Swing for seniors/plus latest tips/CORRECTIONS Flashcards
Card 12: Corrections 2022
Shanks. Be careful on closing the CF on impact. This forces the ball into the hosel creating a shank. Focus on keeping the clubface open through impact.
Sand shots: Nick Faldo says on sand shots the key is to keep the blade open through the shot for good direction.
Regular shots: When you pivot during the shot, don’t aim pivot at the ball. Pivot to the fairway.
Remember to get your right shoulder high, your back arched a little backward and your weight over the left leg, weigh SB also on the outside of your left foot. Remember to finish right shoulder high.
Twist up, twist up! Another you tube video that covers many great swing thoughts.
Twist up on your BS just like John Daly’s kid on the drive video.
Now on the DS Twist down then immediately make your twist up. When you are executing this move, it feels like it is one continuous motion. Just like you are carving out a “U” with your golf swing.
Practice this even without a ball. It is great for staying on plane on both the BS and DS and FF.
Practice twist up, twist up at different speeds to stay in control on every shot.
Also practice holding the CF square on your impact. This will stop pulls and shanks.
Try to FF on the path to your target, just like Hogan did.
Practice getting weight over the left leg when you finish the swing.
Practice a finish right foot tiptoed and your chest and pivot SB square to the fairway target.

2020 Golf
RULES:
- Hit impact with pelvis turn, going completely forward. 2. Keep the triangle width at all times.
- Never swing faster than your pelvis turn.
Danny Maude on YouTube.
This swing is fantastic! Found it on you tube.
Key is to keep triangle rigid start to finish and keep hands pushed away from you.
Left foot normal but right foot is opened close to 45 degrees. This makes it super easy to make a big shoulder turn and still keep eye on the ball.
On DS bring triangle down to transition on the same line shaft was at address.
This makes the ball go very straight, especially on par threes.
So to begin DS, shift your weight and pivot bringing shaft to leveled out transition then rotate into the ball still holding triangle rigid with hands pushed away into impact.
Card 02.
The rigid triangle helps keep you swinging the built up shoulder turn momentum.
If you collapse the triangle, you will be slapping at the ball and a weak shot going to the right. The shot looks majestic when done correctly and it really is fantastic hitting the par threes!
When you hit the ball:
- FF impact keeping the CF on the target path.
- Coast on DS
- On drives and most other iron shots, go to impact with the toe passing the heel. Esp. on Drives. This will keep it straight or perhaps Draw a little.
Driving.
On 5 Wood tee up to center line on CF. then setup about 3 inches in back of the ball.
To pull a strong draw, close CF at address. This is dangerous and causes tons of miss hit pulls!
Drive a 5 iron with CF two inches behind the ball. Position tee half way up lines on club face for your driven 5 iron (or whatever iron you are using.)
Impact the teed up ball level going through it. Do not swing up or you will sky it.
To hit off the ground, snuggle club right next to back of ball. Do not forward press a shot off the ground. Just have the bottom of club resting naturally on your setup. If you forward press or close the face at address, you will top the ball or have a smothered fairway shot that will be ugly.
Setup with the sole flat on the ground and not forward pressed will get the ball high in the air and it will go straight if you follow the swing steps on getting the club back down to its position at address. Remember to bring right arm back down to its address position you had at address. 90% of every shot is in the setup at address.
To launch the ball high in the air, FF with LEFT shoulder high. Hit ball ½ behind ball, this gives ground force reaction to make the shot solid.
Lead with your left, don’t pull through it with the left. Just lead or guide it. Let the “CHAIN” momentum hit through the ball. No extra power from pivot, shoulder or arms. Just a nice solid shot with the swinging chain. This is a slow swing. You are not Tiger Woods. Do not swing fast like he does.
Do just like Jimenez with the graduated baseball type swings before you tee up your ball. Be aware of your CF position going into impact. This little rehearsal does wonders for a good swing.
Final note: on like PW, 8 and 9 irons, forward press just a tiny bit at address so you impact ball with lower grooves on CF. this gives you a high ball with backspin and great distance. Very important!
Card 03.
My last golf with my group was awesome. We used 4 of my drives plus I didn’t tee off on 5,6,7 or 8 so others could use their drives.
The secret of my long and straight shots was doing my senior backswing then start my DS with my pivot into transition bringing my right arm back to my setup position then holding onto all that energy triangle until it naturally swung down to impact the ball.
NOTE: When using my driver, Coast on DS, have toe overrun the heel before impact.
If I PUSH with driver using my right arm, the ball pushes way to the right.
Be sure you have right foot toes back enough to line up in the center of your left foot! Now hit the ball at 4:00 position. Release the club with CF lined up with my target line. It’s a closed position but it prevents slices and pulls.
Mark (Ameren) kept complimenting my swing and asking questions about it because I hit both par three greens while none of the other four did.
But the main factor on why I was hitting so well was in me waiting for the natural timing of the pendulum swing explained in the next card.
Card 04.
Here is the logical construct.
Imagine just swinging a chain back and forth on a pendulum pattern. As long as I kept the speed and timing intact the chain would swing back and forth very high like a golf swing.
It would retain all of its pent up energy. Now I hit the ball with all that stored up energy. I do this by pushing away the triangle from my body and holding that position throughout the entire swing.
Now if I suddenly decide to hit the ball harder and accelerate my arms faster than the pendulum, I will overrun the momentum and hit a duffed weak shot out to the ground.
If I overrun the pent up momentum, I instantly lose all the pent up energy stored in my pendulum swing. This is the major key for a great golf swing.
Card 05.
SOG 11/19/20
Get it up and down. On short pitches and chips, lean the shaft forward 15 degrees for excellent ball contact!
This would be the shaft forward pressed to about 11:00.
Setup with my feet apart the width of club head turned sideways and open my lead foot just a little to allow some mini leg action.
Doing this prevents scooping up the ball and it keeps your hands in front of the ball at impact like Phil Mickelson says to do. (My note: let my pitch/chip start with a gravity drop to the ball)
Remember the heel of club makes it dig/chunk. On chips and pitches, lift the heel off the ground slightly. Also setup ball back a little. Hit down through ball to just in front, to make better contact.
Card 06.
Driving tips from John Daly.
1. On the backswing, load all your weight to the inside of the trail leg not on the outside of your trail leg.
Number 2. Make big shoulder turn. Your back faces 3/4 the target.
Tip from Tiger Woods on the top of your backswing, keep hands distant from your body, mainly your head. This is power.
- *Guard against these two items.**
1. Right elbow flying out.
2. Clubhead swinging around circle and hitting low hook into ground. Should feel like a volley leading with handle.
In other words on your backswing line up your shaft angle with the same angle as your elbow and forearm.
Remember to swing slow and never swing faster than what you are in absolute complete control.
More driving tips.
From Clay Ballard: DRIVES
1. Swing low to high in a controlled circle. Swing straight out, not upward for the long line drives.
2. Raise left hip 1 inch in your set up.
3. Airplane drill for simulation, give longer runway to build up more speed.
4. My note, hold back your release until you FEEL weight transfer!
5. Hold lag, then shift weight into pivot, PELVIS UP. Then you can release lag angles, through and out in front of ball.
6. Do not push the club with arms! Wait for the SWINGING CIRCLE to naturally come around before releasing into impact.
On drives, Set up with ball a couple inches behind left heel. If you set up ball in the middle of stance that promotes hitting down on the ball this may be why I hit the ground before my teed up ball. However, it may help with fairway woods off the ground.
7. Always visualize releasing the club OUT in front of the ball on drives.
8. Keep your release out front and CF pointing to my swing line.
9. Keep shaft angle at address, don’t lean it back toward the center of your body. You want mass of body behind ball.
10. Remember Knees please, the helicopter tilting swing, and when going to impact, my left butt cheek SB between my legs when finishing my shot.
Card 07.
SHORT PITCHES:
Use putting stroke and leading edge of SW aim one inch in front of ball. This gets it in the air great! Also playing ball forward in stance make it go very straight about 25-30 yards. Be careful not to blade the ball and send it way over the green.
Learned two good tips that work well on teed up balls.
1: Match grip and chest position turning into impact.
2: DS into transition guide/throw grip toward target. Hogan talked about swing the grip.
Note: this works perfect for me on my Driver.
Video of Dustin Johnson drive slow motion
- TURN GRIP WITH your belt buckle. This keeps grip turning with chest into impact. Also fits in with pivot and transfer of weight.
Card 08.
More important driving tips:
John Daly: Drives. Put weight on instep of right foot on BS. Not outstep!
BN: Drives. DS will be a long low to high pathway to impact, Swinging level with 3 Wood will top the ball or hit a nosedive shot right in the dirt! Swing slow waiting for the momentum. If I swing fast, I lose good contact which is the most important step.
BN: On DS, keep the lag angles swinging underhand with pivot UP. Then finish upward pelvis pivot releasing out in front of the teed up ball, about 2 feet past ball heading toward target. Strive for this forward release as a swing thought. You won’t achieve it, but you will be close, and adding much power even on a slower swing, like Fred COUPLES.
Review your videos (Clay Ballard) on lag angles positions in the swing.
Three videos in Golf swings 01 album. Times 41, 112, 113. Professor Martin Hall calls these lag angles, FOLD. Hold the fold on DS.
NOTE: Remember to think about “Swing the grip” when you are working on building your swing. This is Hogan’s tip. It can be useful as a swing thought. Added 4/25/20.
4/20/20 Driving range heuristics.
75% of medium bucket went all right. Several great drives. I am going to add some more things that worked well to my swing.
- Driving 3 and 5 woods, tee ball to center line on CF. Driver, tee up to very top of big X image of CF. On all teed balls, setup 2-3 inches behind the ball.
Coming down from top of BS, you keep left arm very straight and first step of DS is to hold FOLD thru transition. The first action will be dropping arms straight/VERTICAL down to transition. This will drop right elbow back down to my waist. At this transition point, your weight transfer and pivot have already moved into the middle of transition. Now continue transition with switching to a sidearm/underhand type swing (mainly my right arm) (more about this later)going into impact release out in front of the teed up ball. Going into release finish pelvis turning to its finish going up. Try following ball in FF with getting left shoulder high.
This feels like you are throwing/catapulting your swing around you like a ball and chain.
- On my teed up 5, 6 7 hybrid, just swing out level, not up, to target. Swinging up causes lots of miss hits.
- For ball on ground iron shots, do everything the same except no underhand transition and swing down, trapping ball against the ground, do not swing up with pelvis.
The underhand type swing. It feels like you are switching to underhand when you are dropping right elbow, BUT once right elbow is down to side of stomach, you switch forearm to a low SIDEARM with back of left wrist being bowed and going into impact being bowed. This is what I would call a BACKHAND impact.
Hit it hard as you want and it will not hook, so long as you fully rotate pelvis on impact. If you only partially shift pelvis, you will pull ball dead left because YOU SWUNG AROUND YOUR FULCRUM.** Pelvis must be **completely facing target forward on your finished shot pose.
Card 09.
Hitting the ball. I used to swing grip straight to ball, but this creates a hard pull left. For straight ball, guide (not pulling) grip somewhere between ball and my feet.
Now with my senior swing it just is a simple matter of not thinking of hitting the ball. Just follow the swing plane downward and let your mind do all the thinking, just like a tennis serve.
Refer to card 13 Twist up, twist up.
Visualize a hinged pitch with your wedge. Grip flies over the ball as CF trails behind and below to contact the ball. My mind knows what to do. Just concentrate on hitting the ball solid. You should be impacting ball with back of your hand. Wrist SB bowed.
May 4th, 2020. I learned today at the range to KEEP MY LEFT ARM VERY STRAIGHT.
Also to point RIGHT elbow on swing path line going into impact.
On my DS, right elbow cannot jump offline on downward swing path. Don’t let it jump out and go offline. Elbow SB on track heading to ball, just brushing on front side of my stomach.
Read about next tip in an older file I made. Swing your pelvis towards the target, NOT AT THE BALL!
Card 10.
May 25, 2020 Heuristics at range.
Had trouble going off my inclined swing angle, panicking on DS, bringing CF off swing path to match CF with teed up ball.
Card 10.
I made a few new rules to not make these mistakes again.
1. Keep left arm straight then HINGED up into BS when back is facing target.
2. Next transfer both weight and chest into DS into impact. I was hitting with arms or arms and weight shift with legs only. Now I added my chest/pelvis bringing DS back to ball. I cannot feel pelvis turning, but concentrated on chest turning to TARGET at impact. This makes a solid shot. (Later focused on griped bottom of “V” in-line to swing path.)
3. I also added a short pause at top of BS**. This gives me time to line up my underhand right elbow with plane line. (See, if I didn’t allow time for this adjustment, I would panic and go ahead with the bad swing. The pause at the top gives me an adjustment period to make a good shot. **My R elbow folds into a lined up SIDE ARM down the swing plane, and my straight left arm holds everything on course. )
Continued …
Some of this is superseded. Refer to next card 29 May 2020
NOTE:
A. Now if I transfer too much weight into shot I will hook.
B. If I pivot or chest it too much, I will pull hook also. So DS IS GENTLE WEIGHT SHIFT, AND SWING THOUGHT ON CHEST IMPACTING BALL WITH CHEST THRUSTING TOWARDS TARGET.
So if all goes well, nice shot. I just have to balance it out. Weight shift, chest thrust to target, grip pathway all the way to ball.
Make CF point to target line after impact. Before impact, make toe of club rotate in front of the heel. This squares club.
Just have to practice drills without ball and practice making BS and DS with body turn up and body turn down, done completely with weight shift, chest thrust, straight left arm, not hands and arms.
Card 11. CORRECTIONS 2022 Tempo and Rhythm: Before I said to shift my weight before swinging. I watched a “Swing Finish” video on you tube. He said time my impact to my hip and shoulder rotation so I impact the ball at the very same instant my rotation is there. He says DO NOT lag your body behind, it can cause pulls and robs me of power. My Tip: swing like you are impacting ball with right shoulder. GETTING BALL HIGH IN AIR, with a high finish like Tom and Jeff S. Requires my finish To mimic the following:
- Weigh on left foot finish, but stay balanced like Fred Couples and swing slow like my drives.
- Center of upper body finishes directly over left leg.
- Back is arched upward pointing to target.
- Right foot balanced on tiptoed right foot.
- Weight feels like it is in your upper hips.
- Finish with my right shoulder HIGH! He says to practice this with regular or foam ball using a half swing. After you get it nailed, then practice it with horizonal left arm, with golf shaft folded vertical. Video is saved on ipad in “watch later” folder.
Rotate toe in front of heel going into impact. Then check that CF is pointing to my target line.
Card 13. This year on driver, 5 wood and 3 wood, practice teeing ball higher so you don’t break the tee every time. If results are good, then expect more distance on drives. Start out where ball is ⅔’s at top of CF to promote swinging up on drives.
On irons, experiment to decide best height for best results.
My goals this year are:
- Hitting 3, 5 and hybrid off the deck to cross the creek.
- Hitting every club with same tempo and rhythm.
- Making a proper finish with instructions on cards 11 and 12.
- Saying goodbye to pulls, hooks and shanks.
- Keeping 90% of drives and shots in fairway.
- Be the groups “ACE” on chipping and pitching.
- Be distinguished in playing sand shots.
- Finish high and long like Jeff S.
Remember extension. Build extension on BS. Maintain that extension on DS. This should add yards to every club. Even do it on chipping and pitches.
Card 14. Chipping, Long drives and Sand SOG
Chipping: Keep lead arm cupped!
Lift trail heel to force CF to hit through ball.
You want Minimum air time, Maximum roll time.
Hover CF, do not ground CF, just over the ground.
LONG DRIVES:
- Tee up and swing straight through ball level.
- Get big stretch at back of BS.
SAND:
Unless lie is buried, use bounce of Sand Wedge to splash it out. Club must go beneath the ball.
Keep lead arm going!!
At range 3-1-22
My secret for great hits.
- Swing the “V”
- Slow BS in line with elbow folding then start DS very slow until transition and weight starting to shift.. Rem to do footwork on swing.
I was hitting okay but no power. Swung the V and remembered SOG lesson saying most people are in a hurry so they start swinging hard at the top of the swing. Doing it this way skips a lot of checkpoints. It goes from top of impact straight to impact!
A couple of days later, I discovered I was swinging through checkpoints too fast, thus eliminating them entirely.
Remember the entire swing is very slow until weight shift and transition is applied!
Card 15: New cure for stopping pulls
Went to range 6/19/22 to experiment a find for stopping pulls. I discovered that my TA and DS both are on the LINE for the ball’s 4:00 position, but I setup directly behind rear of ball then forward press a little.
The big difference is that my TA and DS paths are from and to** the 4:00 position, **but my impact is dead center to rear of ball. Also I try to prolong a foot through the back center of ball with CF. In other words, I take the path on TA from 4:00 and I DS through 4:00 path but my setup and my impact and FF go through the back center of the ball.
This was a breakthrough moment because it fixed everything. In other words, when I first got to the range, I was impacting my DS through the 4:00 position, but this made my shots all go to the right. So I changed it to use the 4:00 position for my TA path, then used the 4:00 position for my DS path. The big change is I use the 4:00 paths for my swing, but use the center rear of the ball for my impact position. Also I try to impact a one foot pathway through the rear center of the ball. This works on all my clubs, including woods and driver! Also this helps my FF to stay to the right instead of wrapping around my body to the left.
