Salmonella Flashcards
What type of bacteria is salmonella?
Gram negative
Facultative Anaerobes
Rod shaped
Foodborne zoonoses (eggs, milk, meat)
What diseases can salmonella cause?
Enteritis
Typhoid
What does inflammatory gastroentiritis lead to?
An influx of neutrophils
Where abouts in the body does salmonella become pathological? What does it have to deal with?
Ileum
Acid ph, intestinal flow
How does salmonella cause disease?
Secretes protein to alter host cell function
Innate immune system recognises bacterial PAMPs
Immune system initiates inflammatory response
Salmonella can survive in macrophages so travels through lymphatic system to spleen/liver
Undergoes intracellular replication
If salmonella is uncontrolled, what does it lead to?
Septicaemia and death
What are bacterial PAMPs? What are they for salmonella?
Bacterial pathogen associated molecular patterns
Flagella and lipopolysaccharides
Which species of salmonella causes typhoid?
Salmonella paratyphoid
