Blood Histology Flashcards
What are the functions of blood plasma?
Carry nutrients, hormones and waste products
Maintain blood fluidity
Maintain oncotic pressure
Blood clotting
What is packed cell volume?
% of blood occupied by cells
How big are erythrocytes? How are they produced? Which hormone regulates this?
1/4 size of a normal cell
Haematopoiesis
Haematopoietin
Where does haematopoietin take place?
Bone marrow Yolk sac Liver Thymus Spleen
Some species/breeds have nucleated RBCs. What affect does this have?
More rigid
Less haemoglobin
What are the precursors of erythrocytes? What do these then form? Describe their organelles.
Erythroblasts - contain nucleus
Reticulocyte - no nucleus, but organelles
Old cells are fragile and less flexible. Which cells recycle and remove these?
Macrophages
Type of phagocyte
What are the parts to the blood smear?
Head
Body
Monolayer
Feathered edge
Describe the structure of haemoglobin
4 polypeptide chains each with a haem group
Centred by an iron ion
Describe the polypeptide chains found in adult and foetal haemoglobin.
Adult - 2a, 2b
Foetal - 2a, 2 gamma
How is CO2 transported in blood?
Most chemically modified as carbonate
Some protein bound
Few dissolved in plasma
What are the two types of bone marrow?
Red marrow
Yellow marrow
Where is red marrow found?
Long, flat bones
Describe yellow marrow
High number o dat cells
Can be converted to haematopoietic tissue if needed
What is the function of leukocytes?
Immunity and inflammation
