Lymphoid Histology Flashcards
What is the function of lymphoid tissue?
Producing lymphocytes and antibodies
What are the 2 types of immunity?
Non-specific (innate)
Specific (adaptive)
What are the 1st and 2nd defence mechanisms for innate immunity?
1st - skin,mucous membranes, secretions (tear/saliva/mucous)
2nd - inflammation and phagocytosis
What are the primary lymphoid organs?
Bone marrow (all lymphocytes made here, B cells mature here) Thymus (T cells mature here)
What are the secondary lymphoid organs? What happens here?
Lymph nodes and spleen
Mature T and B cells undergo clonal selection
In the lymph nodes and spleen, mature lymphocytes undergo clonal selection to form what?
T cells - cytotoxic and memory
B cells - plasma and memory
What do plasma cells do?
Produce antibodies
Give an example of why immunity deteriorates with age
Thymus shrinks
Where is the thymus? What colour does it stain and why?
between lungs
Purple - made up of lymphocytes
What are the areas of the thymus gland?
Capsule
Medulla
Cortex
Septum (connective tissue)
What are Hassal’s corpuscles? Which gland are they found in?
Swirl shaped structures
Thymus gland only
What is lymph? What do lymph nodes do?
Extra cellular fluid
Drain specific parts of the body
What is the function of the spleen? Where is it found?
Balance body fluid and store blood
Largest organ in lymphatic system
Next to stomach
Which euthanasia causes splenomegaly in animals?
Barbiturate euthanise
