SA: Diseases of Diestrus and Anestrus Flashcards
Cystic endometrial hyperplasia (Pyometra Complex)
Diestral dz that occurs during P4 phase of cycle
60-90d postestrus in bitch (anytime in queen)
CS of pyometra
Depression (toxemia)
Leukocytosis
Vulva discharge (open)
PU/PD (endotoxins from E. coli)
Dx of pyometra
Vaginal cytology
Min data base (CBC and chem)
Guarded culture of cranial vagina
Medical therapy for pyometra
Lysis (PGF2a) of the CL and evacuation of the uterus
Abx, antiemetics, anti-inflamm, uterine lavage
How should you treat pyometra
Treat to effect: uterine contents gone per US and P4 below 3 ng/ml
PGF2a
Dinoprost or Cloprostenol
Causes smooth muscle contraction for uterine evacuation
Lyse the CL
Medical therapy consideration
Young or able to pass on one litter (will relapse)
Culture/ sensitivity
PGF2a has side effects (30-40m duration)
Pyometra recommedation
Tx, breed next occuring estrus then spay
Puppy Vaginitis
Small amount of purulent discharge in a prepubertal bitch
Dx: cytology, cystocentesis
Tx for puppy vaginitis
Benign neglect → goes away with first estrus
Postpone the spay until resolves
Adult Vaginitis
Seen in spayed bitches
Rule out: perivulvar dermatitis, inverted juvenile vulva, UTI, FBs, tumors
Tx for adult vaginitis
Mild: hormonal tx- estrogen (DES to thicken vaginal epithelium)
Severe: epsioplasty- correct vulva confirmation
Probiotics
Misalliance
Confirm pregnant first
US @ 1 month post mating
Tx: sx*, medical (b4 30 days)
Mismating shots
Estrogen (within 72 hrs of breeding, while still in estrus)
Client release form signed (malpractice)
What’s the problem with mismating shots?
Causes tubular blockage and disrupts/ alters uterine environment
25% incidence of pytometra
