Rheumatoid Arthitis 9/27 Flashcards
Rheumatoid Arthitis
Chronic Inflammatory
disorder
◦Primarily affects joints
◦Also affects other organs
Articular Cartilage
connective tissue at the ends of bones to provide a protective cushion
Synovial Membrane
made of cells that produce synovial fluid and remove debris.
Synovial Fluid
viscous substance that lubricates the joint and reduces friction
Articular Capsule
Provides Support to the Joint
-Connects directly to the periosteum (the outer layer of the bone)
Blood Vessels and Lymphatic Vessels
vessels that run through the synovial membrane
HLA-DR
the susceptibility genes; a specific type of Class II MHC molecule associated with rheumatoid arthritis because it encodes the shared epitopes
Shared Epitopes
specific amino acid sequences found on certain proteins that can trigger an immune response. In rheumatoid arthritis, there is a shared epitope on a region of the HLA-DR molecule. In RA, the shared epitope binds to citrullinated proteins
Shared epitopes- rheumatoid impact
increases the risk of rheumatoid arthritis by binding to citrullinated proteins, initiating an immune response.
Citrullination
a post-translational modification in which arginine is converted to citrulline
no longer recognize the protein as a self antigen.
PAD enzymes
Peptidylarginine Deaminases (PADs)
catalyze arg–> citrulline
