Bells Palsy Flashcards
Bells Palsy
Neurological disorder
-Facial muscle weakness or
paralysis
idiopathic
disease that has
unknown cause/of spontaneous
origin
result of facial nerve damage
7th cranial nerve
cranial nerve 7
Connects the brain to the muscles
that control facial expression, taste sensations and movement of the front portion of the tongue
cranial nerve 7 location
Begins in the pons of the brain stem
goes through the facial canal
(temporal bone) and ends in the
stylomastoid foramen
how many branches from this nerve
6
Temporal branch
Controls Frontalis
Muscle
* Inflammation: droop of
wrinkles on the
forehead and eyebrow
droop
Zygomatic branch
Controls Orbicularis
Oculi muscle
* Inflammation: droop of
the eyelid and under eye
Buccal Branch
Controls buccinator
and orbicularis oris
muscles
* Inflammation: droop of
the lips
Marginal/ Mandibular Branch
Controls the mentalis
muscle
* Inflammation: droop of
the lower lip and chin
Cervical Branch
Controls the platysma
muscle
* Inflammation: droop of
the neck and jaw
Posterior Auricular
Nerve Branch
Controls the occipitalis
muscle
* Inflammation: droop of
the back of the skull
which affects the facial
expressions
Posterior Auricular
Upper Motor Neuron
Occurs in the Motor Cortex
(skeletal muscle control) of the
Brain which affects everything
but the temporal branch
lower motor neuron
- Occurs at the fallopian canal and
puts pressure on the facial nerve
which effects all branches
damage to neurons
Compressed nerve
- Inflammation
- Degeneration
- Macrophages attack
