Diabetes Flashcards
Diabetes
Disease in which the bodys ability to produce or respond to hormone insulin is
impaired and results in an abnormal metabolism of carbs
type 1 diabetes
Immune system mistakenly treats the beta cells in your pancreas that create insulin as foreign invaders and destroys them,
○ When enough are destroyed pancreas cannot make insulin or makes so little
of it
result of type 1 lack of insulin
Glucose builds up in our blood stream because without insulin blood glucose cannot enter the cells which causes high blood glucose or hyperglycemia
type 1 is an..
autoimmune disorder with an attack on beta cells that secrete insulin normally
type one environmental infections
Coxsackie virus, enteroviruses, cytomegalovirus, rubella,
influenza B, mumps virus, SARS-CoV-2 (covid 19)
second cause of type 1
Presence of circulating pancreatic islet autoantibodies
inflammatory cytokines
TNFα IFNγ and IL-1β
type 2 diabetes
- Pancreas does not produce enough insulin
- Cells respond poorly to insulin and take in less sugar
type 2 process step 1
Cells in muscle, fat and the liver become resistant to insulin, because of this the cells do not take in enough sugar
type 2 process step 2
Pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels within a healthy rang
Insulin resistance
A lot of blood sugar enters bloodstream→ pancreas pumps high levels of insulin→ cells stop responding to insulin→ blood sugar stays high which causes pancreas to release more insulin → as result pancreas cannot keep up and blood sugars keep increasing
