Epilepsy Flashcards
epilepsy
Neurological disorder that causes multiple unprovoked reoccurring seizures
that are usually caused by triggers
epileptic episode needs…
2 or more seizures need to occur in order for it to be an epileptic episode
Focal
single hemisphere/part if
brain is involved
4 types of epilepsy
1) Focal
2) Generalized
3) Generalized AND Focal
4) Unknown
Focal types
-Focal aware (atonic)
-Focal impaired (Partial)
- Focal motor (simple-partial)
- Focal non-motor
Generalized
Both hemispheres of brain are
involved**
Generalized types
1) Generalized tonic-clonic
(motor) (”grand mal”)
2) Generalized Absence
(non-motor) (”petit mal”)
Inhibitory pathway
1)GABA is released
2)Acts on GABA-R which causes channels to open
3)Allows Cl- to enter
4)Causes hyperpolarization and Inhibits activity of AP’s
Excitatory pathway
1)Glutamate is released
2)Acts on NMDA and AMPA receptors
3)Allows NA+ and Ca+ to enter
4)Causes depolarization and AP’s
GABA-R receptors
dysfunctional
AMPA and NDMA receptors
general seizure
NMDA
brain’s primary NT- allows for Ca permeability
AMPA
mediate fast synaptic transmission within the CNS; allows for Na+ permeability
Glutamate activity
high during epileptic events
