Meningitis 9/27 Flashcards
meningitis
inflammation of 2 layers called the leptomeninges
viral meningitis
most common type of meningitis, with 52% of people with mild viral meningitis usually getting better on their own, and is not fatal
Bacterial meningitis
contagious and caused by infection from certain bacteria. It can be fatal if left untreated
1/10 die, 1/5 serious complications
Fungal meningitis
rare form of meningitis and is caused when a fungus infects the body then the bloodstream then to the brain or spinal cord
Parasitic
less common than viral or bacterial meningitis, and it’s caused by parasites that are found in dirt, feces, and on some animals and food, like snails, raw fish, poultry, or produce
Non-infectious meningitis
caused by other medical conditions or treatments
Chronic meningitis
meningitis that lasts longer than 4 weeks, The causes of chronic meningitis can be fungi, rheumatological conditions, and cancer, among others
BBB cells
enodthelial cells, astrocytes(glial cells), microglia( resident immune cells)
Cerebral Spinal Fluid
cushioning/ bathes meninges in nutrients
CSF has…
few WBC
CSF produced by
choroid plexus— or ependymal cells
three protective layers of meninges in order outside in
dura matter, arachnoid mater/ pia mater(leptomeninges), subarachnoid space is btwn leptomeninges
direct spread
This occurs when a pathogen enters the brain or spinal cord, travels through the meninges, and finally reaches the cerebrospinal fluid.
Hematogenous Spread
This is when the pathogen enters the bloodstream and moves up in the blood vessels, making it to the BBB and getting into the CSF
