Rhabdoviruses Flashcards
Virus in the family of Rhabdovirus
Rabies
Genus of Rabies
Lyssavirus
Physical features of rabies
- capsid helical
- enveloped
- bullet shaped
Nucleic acid of rabies
negative ; single stranded ; RNA
Location of replication of rabies
cytoplasm
Replication cycle of rabies
- bind to cell surface via Proteins
- virus penetrates host cell, enters by pinocytosis
- virus enters endosome
- transcription; viral polymerase transcribe 5 mRNA and + RNA templates
5,6. Translation; synthesis of N,P,M,G,L proteins - Replication; viral polymerase makes copies of +RNA which act as templates for -RNA.
- Assembly; NPL complex+ (-)RNA + M proteins
- Bud
Rabies is a disease of the
CNS
Incubation period
20-90 days; asymptomatic
Prodromal phase of rabies
- similar to flu
- discomfort at bite
Neurological phase
- 2 to 7 days
- cerebral dysfunction, anxiety, confusion, agitation
- acute confusion, abnormal behavior, coma, cardiac arthymia
Rabies mechanism of transport in body
Travel via retrograde axonal transport in CNS; then transport to eye, skin, salivary glands via nerves
Rabies virus is concentrated in;
Salivary glands
Rabies and its association with hydrophobia
Invades and damages the muscles involved in drinking and swallowing; suffer excruciating pain on swallowing liquids.
Transmission and common reservoir of rabies
- bites and scratch
- bats,foxes,raccoons, skunk
Diagnosis of rabies
-histopathology, electron microscopy, direct florescent antibody test, immunohistochemistry
