Polyomaviridae Flashcards
Viruses of polyomaviridae
- BK and JC viruses
2. SV40(simian polyomavirus) and murine polyomavirus
Structure of polyomaviruses
Smaller, less complex than papillomavirus
Replication locations of BK and JC
JC - respiratory tract, urinary tract, CNS
BK - respiratory tract, urinary tract
Patients susceptible to infection
immunocompromised patients
Pregnancy and BKJC viruses
viruses reactivated during pregnancy, no transmission to baby
Clinical presentation of a BK viral infection
- Ureteral stenosis in renal transplant patients
2. hemorrhagic cystitis in bone marrow transplant patients
Clinical presentation of a JC viral infection
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy(PML)
- virus infects oligodendrocyte cells, resulting in loss of white matter
- changes to speech, vision, coordination, mental
- paralysis and death
Prognosis of PML
1 to 4 months, death within 2 years
Pathogenesis of BK and JC
- enter into respiratory tract, infect lymphocytes, and then kidney
- BK establishes latent infection in kidney
- JC infection in kidneys B cells, monocyte lineage cells
- viral shedding in urine, severe urinary infection BK
- viremia and CNS infection, JC
Control
none
