Clinical presentation of Mumps
- Swollen, painful salivary glands within cheeks
- fever, headache, pain moving jaw, weakness, fatigue
Incubation period of Mumps
16-18days, range 12-26 days
Complications of Mumps
- Orchitis
- Oophoritis
- Pancreatitis
- Aseptic Meningitis
- Encephalitis
- Deafness
Description of Orchitis
- inflammation of testicles
- gonadal atrophy may follow, infertility rare
- gonadal swelling usually resolves in 1 week
Description of Oophoritis
- associated with pelvic pain and tenderness
- in females, infertility not reported
Description of Pancreatitis
- sudden onset pain of epigastric pain and tenderness
- fever, chills, nausea, vomiting
- elevated amylase level occurs
- lipase more specific indicator of pancreatitis
- resolves in week
Initial pathogenesis of Mumps
- acquired by respiratory droplets
- infects epithelial cells
- nasopharynx and regional lymph nodes
Prolonged pathogenesis of Mumps
- viremia occurs after 12-25 days for 3-5 days
- travels to meninges, salivary glands, pancreas, gonads
Two characteristic symptoms of Mumps
- Parotitis and aseptic meningitis
Transmission of Mumps
- person to person via respiratory secretions
- peak later winter and spring
Individuals at risk for Mumps
-unvaccinated people and immunocompromised
