Q

Echinococcus granulosus life cycle (7)

A
  1. Embryonated egg in faeces - ingestion of eggs by intermediate host (sheep, goats, swine, horses)
  2. Oncosphere hatches - penetrates intestinal wall
  3. Hydarid cyst in liver, lungs (grow in diff tissues) - reach maturity after 6-12 months
  4. Ingestion of cysts (in organs - feed on offal from intermediate host) by definitive host (dogs + other carnivores)
  5. Protoscolex (tiny adult tapeworms) from cyst
  6. Scolex attaches to intestine
  7. Develop into adults in the small intestine
  • PPP = 40-50 days in definitive host
  • Humans = accidental intermediate hosts (hydatid cysts in lungs + tissues)
  • Domestic and sylvatic cycles (between non-human primates (e.g., monkeys) and mosquito species found in the forest canopy)
